Default Canning Jars

I have been doing a good deal of canning lately and am always on the lookout for sales. If you know of any, please post. I have a bunch of coupons from recent inserts so I've been checking Target and other usual places but nothing so far to set the world on fire.

Right now, Ball Mason Jars has a deal on for buy 4 packs get 4 free, plus take 15% off clearance jars. Don't know how that shakes out with shipping, but it may be worth a look. No coupons required. Here's a link:

I get canning jars from Dollar General when they have their $5/$25. Otherwise, I wait until after canning season and they usually have some clearance and then use the $5/$25. They have pints and quarts. Fairly certain they may have 1/2 pint jelly jars. They only have the standard kids, though. No wide mouths. They are Golden Harvest brand I think. They have lids as well. Never had any issues with them, but I only do high acidic water bath canning. Haven't tried my pressure canner yet.

ACE hardware carries canning supplies. If you join their rewards you can get $5 off coupons regularly.

I make lots of jam so I tend to use the 1/2 pint jars. I haven't seen them at Dollar General although the closest one is about 40 minutes away so I rarely go there.

Golden Harvest is fine. I think they're a bargain line produced by Newell Rubbermaid who recently purchased Jarden Corp, the company that makes Ball and Kerr mason jars. I used to buy them at Big Lots until the West Coast stores quit selling canning jars.

I do belong to ACE and check out other Hardware stores when they have occasional sales. I just have a lot of the $3 off a case coupons so I was hoping to stock up. I've also gone to commercial food container wholesalers, but the cost is comparable. The GH 1/2 pints have lovely embossed fruit patterns in the glass so they're pretty as well as practical. I've never had a problem using those jars.

Just a head's up. Ball/Kerr seems to be having a big online sale for these jars. The 16 oz regular pints are a steal, if you can manage to get some. $4.99 for a case of 12. Right now it says they're unavailable. Don't know if they do backorders, but it's worth checking out.

I was sorry to see they'd yanked the 12 pints for $5 deal. Most of the remaining prices are higher than getting them at Walmart or Target, so, meh for this overall sale. Most of the ACE hardware stores are having sales this weekend, too, but not anything exciting. I think the pints are $8 on sale.

That deal on fresh preserving seems to be monthly, at least for the past few months. But maybe they were just cleaning out excess inventory?

I don't believe Golden Harvest makes 1/2 pint jars. I have used both their quarts and pints, though, and have been very pleased. Both pressure canned and hot water bath canned in them.

I would advise staying away from Mainstays jars (Walmart's brand). Made in China and I have seen a lot of bad reviews on them. I have several, bought from when I didn't know any better, but I only use them for dry storage now. Same goes with Martha Stewart brand. I saw them on clearance once somewhere, but they were made in China so I left them. I don't trust Made in China canning jars (or lids).

Also, you might want to see if you have any Amish/Mennonite bulk food stores around you. You probably don't have many out there but there might be some. I've got quite a few within an hour drive of me. There's one I like to go to once or twice a year, and make a nice little trip out of it. Their prices on canning jars always seemed to be significantly lower than Walmart's. Plus you can buy bulk lids, too.

I have never been able to get in on it, but I'm told that at the end of the season, jars can be had at Lowe's for 75% off.

Check your local Tractor's Supply too, they stock canning stuff. A few years ago mine put all their lids on clearance for $0.29 a package. I cleaned them out, must have been at least 50 boxes. Ball brand, too. I'm still using those lids!

Wow. That sounds like the dream deal. I didn't realize we even had Tractor's Supply out here, but it looks like there's one about a hour away. I may stop in next week to check. Same for Lowes. I may pop in there, too.

Once I hit a WalMart that had 12 packs of 4 oz jelly jars marked down to $2. I got all 16 cases of them. I make a ton of jam, so they're long gone. But that was sweet. I don't trust Mainstays brand lids as they don't proudly announce that they're BPA free the way the Ball lids do. I've also seen what look like Mason jars with a China imprint on the bottom that also say not safe for canning. Canning jars are made to take extreme heat for pressure and hot water bath canning.

In all my canning, I've only had one Ball jar crack (and by now I've processed at least a thousand). The reviews I read of the Mainstays jars seem to complain mostly about the lids and rings, but there's not much of a price difference, especially with coupons and sales on the Ball/Kerr brands. Why bother taking a chance? I'd give the lids and rings a wide berth, regardless.

Also, on finding clearance canning jars: If one is close to a Kroger store , check their "woo-hoo" section(area/areas where they put clearanced products).

Last week I was fortunate to stumble upon clearance Ball jelly jars:: $3.58. Whipped out my Ball MC's ($3 off one case) and snagged 3 cases for .58 cents a piece!
