And this surprises us? I know I for one, as well as my hubby, tend to overspend. It is not good and I am really trying to reign in my spending! I am hitting places like Goodwill, Salvation Army, and yard sales for things I may need/want.

Great article and very true. I've actually started to write down what I'm spending and work out a budget to chip away at my debt. I've had to really re-evaulate what are my wants and needs and I no longer have the desire to keep up appearances. As I've looked through my belongings (in preparation for an upcoming move), I can't believe how much nonsense I've accumulated mainly on impulse purchases.
I think a lot of this is learned over generations. I see it in my grandmother and my mother. My mother has closets full of clothes that she has never worn. They still have price tags on them. She also has a living room full of unopened presents, clothing, and household goods. My grandfather built my grandmother an enclosed back porch and several sheds for her to store "her bargain finds" in. I have struggled to get away from collecting..and yes hoarding too. |

Thank you, good article. It doesn't impress me at all and I can careless that my neighbor has to slave away down at the paper mill and suck up all the overtime he can get to pay for that new motorcycle, new truck and new camper. The camper, he towed it home from the dealer this spring and it hasn't moved again, you can't go camping when you're having to work overtime every weekend to pay your bills. At least he can drive the motorcycle and truck to work.

im confused. am i the only american who never learned these behaviors? it all seems foreign to me. i take every purchase i make very seriously. even buying little items in the dollar store. i just spent over 4 months carefully considering the purchase of 3 dvds ($5 per dvd) and a pair of slippers, even though i had the money already saved up just for that purpose. now to be fair the slippers were a bit extravagant. i mean, they were $13. i havent paid that much for an article of clothing in a very long time so it was a big deal to me.. but anyway, i dont understand the concept of not carefully considering the cost benefit of each purchase. how do so many people around me do it? my dad is sorta like me. it took him a year of staring longingly at netbooks before he broke down and treated himself.. the only thing is that he doesnt look up reviews of electronics before he buys them which drives me insane because i like to know what kind of quality i am buying. so yeah, i just dont understand that article. the entire idea of overspending is just so foreign to me. does not compute

We are trying really hard NOT to do th eoverspending anymore...
Sam is the more thrifty one, and I'm the shopper, but we are both trying really really hard! We have a fully stocked up deep freeze and we cut down our food budget to $55 for two weeks; Lena, wife to Sam (SGT Hall), Momma to my fur baby, Rollie, & my 10 Angels

My household went almost need only a few months ago. I conducted a deep clean and I could not believe all the stuff that took time to move, shot photos, donated, gave away and sold. I decided to pack my life in five boxes and winnowed them down to four. I have more stuff to take photos, sell and give away. The only things I bought recently was an Doreen Virtue Ascended Master tarot deck, a Tanakh and a K2 meter. I only plan to pick up other religious texts and finance them through coupon sales

DH and I are definitely not overspenders because we both hate to shop. For us, it is a chore to have to shop for just about anything.
I am a coupon shopper and a stockpiler, but only because I know that it is the most cost effective way to purchase the products that my family uses regularly. And sure, sometimes I get a really awesome deal which makes it "fun"; but for the most part, it is still a "chore". |
