In the Home Depot ad they have a Magic Chef 5.5 cu ft chest freezer for $179. DH and I really need one and I wonder if anyone has this one or thinks it is a good deal. Should we just get a used one instead or is this an all around better deal because it's new?

I would not buy a used chest freezer unless they turned it off and cleaned with bleach. I could tell you some stories but you do not want to hear them.....

Any 5.5 for less than $200 is a good deal. Check more than one store. Those get dented easily and have "green tag" specials on them alot. Good luck!

I would buy new if you can!! The brand new freezers are more energy efficent. You'll be happy with the food storage and with you energy bill!

Thanks ya'll. We looked at Lowe's tongiht and they have a diff brand, same size that is $179 reg price. I know we need one, but I'm gonna wait till we get our house next month.

THD used to have them for about $129 about 2 years ago, but the quality is better now. Emarkle is right about the new ones being more energy efficient.

That looks like a good price. We've always gotten standing freezers, but I always look at the chest ones too.

I have never heard of that Maxx. That seems crazy!

I'm getting a chest freezer this summer!!! We're running electricity to the shed and I'm doing it. I need to figure out how to somewhat insulate it, though. It's a metal shed and we're in NC, so I know our electric bill is going to go up some from it. But there's no where else to put it so oh well. Now to decide on what size to get. Let us know what you get when you get in the new house!!!
