Someone gave me this link or told me about, I think it may have been jfred. Canning for the Average Family in 1941 I had to go look and see how I was comparing. Pretty close I think. I’ve put up quite a bit this year (over 1300 jars plus dehydrated, frozen, etc. (only 5 jars away as of this morning from 1400 jars). Our pantry is bursting at the seams. tally post here at WUC: http://www.weusecoupons.com/upload/2803488-post2.html I am still canning for the year too. My canners really never get put away completely as I can almost all year round what with putting up jars of beans, and more to fill those bare spots on the shelves back up. Anyone still canning?

I just started to try canning. I was able to put up a dozen jars last year 4 tomatoes and the rest was Mulberry Jelly/Jam. This year my tomatoes plants haven't produced yet. For some reason I keep getting blossom end drop. I am planning on putting up a few jars of applesauce over the next few months....

Foggy -- Good site, I love how she broke down how much self space would be needed. Also that was just veggies and fruit, no mention of meat. I am thinking back in the forties men hunted, fished and country people had smoke houses to preserve meat. I really enjoy reading articles like this. Thanks for posting!
Oh, my canner is not getting put away either. As I get more organized, I am starting soups and canning also baked beans and few other meal type things like spg sauce with the meat in it. Love my freezers but I would feel better knowing I had plenty of grap and go food canned in case of emergencies. Love the post--keep them going!! |

I really want to start canning soooo bad. I posted a wanted ad on Craigslist and Freecycle to see if anyone wants to offload some canning equipment. Foggy, every time I see what you've put up I get starry eyed...
![]() My mom mentioned something about counties having areas where you can book and use a kitchen and canning equipment for free. This was in Wisconsin so I'm going to try and research it here in MO. Anyone heard of this? Thanks for the article! ![]() Co-Forum Leader for Dollar Stores and Forum Leader for Price Chopper - Midwest/Kansas City

Short story... we have been repairing our home from the April 29 Hailstorms that did $25,000 in damage to our house. We are Tweaking repairs with home improving, installed a generator and running a gas line on Monday to get a fireplace blower- heater and ta- da! My new gas stove. I had a cooktop, very unreliable for controlling - regulating heat. It was the worst stove ever. I am looking forward to gas cooking my pressure cookers and canners. I can't wait to can meat and soups!

Here are web sites/links for canning locations--Mormon canneries included--enjoy! I will add more info later. Also, if you are interested in grocery salvage stores/produce auctions, I will post info too. In many Mennonite/Amish areas, you can attend a produce auction and buy in bulk even if you are not a wholesale or restaurant owner but an individual or family.
Home Storage Center Locations (Mormon site for canning locations.) http://frugalliving.about.com/od/can...-Locations.htm (Community Canneries that are nationwide links.) http://nchfp.uga.edu/index.html (University of Georgia's site/info for National Center for Home Food Preservation with links.) http://www.extremebargains.net/store...Directory.html (Independent Discount & Salvage Grocery Stores' nationwide site/links.) For produce auctions, just Google to search since there are so many nationwide. Use PRODUCE AUCTIONS for the words to Google info. Foodie Last edited by foodie; 10-06-2012 at 07:35 PM.. |
