Museum/Zoo discounts

I didn't know where to post this originally, but I think this is the perfect place for any homeschooling frugal moms.

I just found out about this website, it's a Museum in Ohio, but if you purchase their membership the benefits are also good for over 300 reciprocal science museums, zoos and aquariums worldwide. The "Family" package is only $69 and includes the following:

" * Two named adults living in the same household, and all their children 17 and younger

* Good for one full year from date of purchase

* Free unlimited admission to the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery

* Free unlimited admission to SunWatch Indian Village/Archaeological Park

* Free Planetarium Shows and discounts on Laser Shows at the Boonshoft Museum

* Reduced rates for special activities, such as select Educational programs, birthday parties and summer camps

* 10% discount in both Boonshoft Museum and SunWatch gift shops

* Invitations to members-only events

* Smart-E News electronic newsletter and Quick-E Bytes electronic announcements

* Mailed events and activities guide

* Reciprocal benefits to over 300 science museums, zoos and aquariums worldwide through the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) and Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)"

I think it's a good deal seeing as it's going to be $27.50 for one visit to our local zoo (2 adults, 2 y/o, and 10 m/o). So, if we are able to go to the zoo and/or the museum more than twice within the next year, it pays for itself! I hope this helps someone else.

Update: I just found out that if you live within 90 miles of the museum/center you wish to visit, you can't. It's meant for people who travel.

Nevermind guys, I just found out that if you live within 90 miles of the museum/center you wish to visit, you can't. It's meant for people who travel. I'm going to update the OP. Sorry.

We can buy a zoo membership discount similar to this at a local zoo in Chattanooga and it gives up discounts and/or free admission to over 200 other zoos across the United States.

We buy the family discount pkg. at the Chattanooga Zoo for about $20 cheaper than what it would cost us for the same thing if we bought it at the Knoxville Zoo. lol Both zoos are almost the same driving distance/time from our home so saving the extra $20 is ok with us. lol

We rotate the attraction memberships we get for the family so we can do different stuff each year.

One year we had the zoo membership.

next year we had memberships to the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga as well as Rock City .... both courtesy of dh's work.

we are considering another zoo one this year.

we also take advantage of museum "free days" when they have them.

The Museum of Modern Art in Chattanooga used to have the first Friday of the month free to the public. We would go on that day.

Now the Creative Discovery Museum has started having free days once a month.... but it's always a Thursday evening which has made it difficult for us to go as I don't like going to places like that alone with all 6 young children and dh doesn't get home until late.

We also look for local attractions that either offer family rates or offer educational discounts to homeschool families.

A local tower over in Crossville which is a museum is free to homeschool families. Donations are accepted though. There's also a military museum there that is free.

So don't overlook things in your own backyard to go visit as a homeschool family.

Zaycon foods sells boxes of chicken, fish, kielbasa, hot dogs, bacon, fruit and more (sales at certain time of year for your area. - Sign up is free to see when the sales are!). Signature and posts may contain affiliate links.

I love going to museums and zoos. Last weekend we spent Saturday visiting a small little town called Micanopy. It was wonderful and very interesting. It is where they filmed the movies Cross Creek and Doc Hollywood. After that we took a stroll at Paynes Prairie Park. The scenery is just so beautiful there.
