Question Marks Steam Cleaning question

I need to clean carpets, I have a steam cleaner, but the soap is sooo expensive, any one know what i might try. Planned on dissolving some borax into the tank water. What ya'll think? Tia

I haven't tried Borax but I have cleaned my lighter colored carpets with a little cleaning solution and very little bleach (don't do this if you have never tested your carpet). I've also used warm water and vinegar but I usually spray with a little freshener after or put a tad of good smelling stuff in with the vinegar and water solution.

I havent tried to put it in my carpet cleaner, but the cheap Awesome Cleaner from the dollar tree got paint out of my brand new carpet.

A friend of mine works for the dart paper company and told me about this product. Its what they tell employees to get for getting ink out of clothing.

Thanks, I just thought those types would get too foamy, but i guess if i dilute them enough. think i'm gonna try pine sol, plus it smells so good!

Just an FYI when using pine sol. I recently read that insects are attracted to the scent of pine sol. I use the Woolite carpet spray in mine, the kind you use for spot cleaning. It is about $3 a bottle at walmart. I have light colored carpets in my house.

If you keep oxyclean in the cabinet i use that i add water to the tank as hot as possible then a scoop or two of oxyclean. you can get a small canister of the dollar store brand works just as good.

I don't have a tip but wanted to thank you for asking this question and thank everyone who's answered. I am preparing to steam clean my carpets soon and it never occurred to me that there might be alternatives to the name brand cleaning solution.
