'96 Dodge Grand Caravan 201K (on third tranny) plus a bunch of other problems
'00 Nissan Pathfinder over 120K (I can't remember. It's my husband's car and he puts on around 40K a year so I lose track of the mileage)... we've had it for almost 2 years and when we bought it, there was 70K on it)

What is the new government incentive?

I've got a 2000 Mustang with 100,000 miles that I'm thinking about trading in.

The government incentive is the cash for clunkers program. You can get $4,500 for your clunker when you trade it in for a new car that gets better gas mileage. The details are on pg 3 of this thread, I think.

Here are some FAQs on the Cash for clunkers program:

CARS.gov - Car Allowance Rebate System - Helpful Q&As for Consumers - Formerly Referred to as “Cash for Clunkers”

Something that is interesting is that the clunker you are trading in must have 18 mpg or less as a new vehicle. If as a new vehicle, it got better than 18 mpg, it would not qualify for the incentive.

The link I posted has lots of info and a link to site that you can check to see the combined city/highway mpg of your car as a new vehicle.

From the site:
There are several requirements (but you also have to meet certain conditions for the car or truck you wish to buy). Your dealer can help you determine whether you have an eligible trade in vehicle.

Your trade-in vehicle must

have been manufactured less than 25 years before the date you trade it in
have a "new" combined city/highway fuel economy of 18 miles per gallon or less
be in drivable condition
be continuously insured and registered to the same owner for the full year preceding the trade-in
The trade-in vehicle must have been manufactured not earlier than 25 years before the date of trade in and, in the case of a category 3 vehicle, must also have been manufactured not later than model year 2001
Note that work trucks (i.e., very large pickup trucks and cargo vans) have different requirements.
