Coins Loving Low Spend / No Spend_February 2017

I hope everyone's new year got off to a good start.

While we did get a little snow here, January was a very warm month, more like late spring than winter. So hopefully, many of you are running way ahead on your heating budget for the season.

When setting your February goals and budgets, take into consideration that February only has 28 days.

If you have Valentine's Day plans, make sure you plan for that in your budget and goals.

Now is the time to start putting away money (if you didn't start in January) for any Easter trips or family get together that you may have planned.

For newbies and lurkers: We welcome newbies and would like to have you join us for February and the new year. There are no set rules, you make and follow your own financial rules as well as set your own personal goals. This is not a competition, so don't be over zealous and too aggressive, set personal goals and budgets that you can actually accomplish, but make sure you push forward by not being too lenient or easy on yourself. In other words, make it challenging for you. Each person's circumstances are different, some of us have big families and some of us may be single or empty nesters.

Thank you for starting a new thread. We did well in January. but went a little over budget a few hours before the first of February. We had to pick up cough medicine, and we count that in the grocery budget. But it would only be a little bit, and needed. And I think we still did great for the month overall. I need to plan February's menu, and grocery list still.

We did so good not eating out in January, but this month we are eating out on the first day of the month. LOL But I got knocked out today for dental work, and not feeling up to cooking. And my husband is tired from watching the kids, and helping. LOL I think we all deserve a nice treat today. But we budget for eating out as well, and are trying not to eat out as much as we can.

Katie, sounds like you have it all under control. we did really good in Jan. on the grocery budget. Ate from freezer and stockpile with just buying fresh fruits and veggies. milk and bread. This week I still won't have to buy much because I still have several meals in the freezer I can fix. I have a big spiral ham in the freezer but will probably save that for Easter. I still have ground beef, pork chops, chicken, salmon, meat balls and 1 0r 2 meat loaves that I froze back in Dec. I also have a big container of frozen homemade vegetable soup so I have lots of fixings for meals still left and I will be able to still keep grocery budget down this month. I am also under budget for our heating bills since it has been such a mild winter. For our winter heating I am about 120.00 under what we had spent by this time last year. Even though I would love to get a couple big snows I can live with these really mild temperatures. Still wanting to cut down on eating out but it is something dh loves to do on the weekends.

In for this month. Going to set a goal for 13 no spends, but hopefully I can get more than that.

Yesterday and today are no spends, so that's 2/13 for the month.

Also was able to add more to my Christmas budget for next year. I am over half way saved, plan to finish out this month and then start fluffing up my emergency funds a bit.

Here's an example of why it helps to be a little organized. We realized we were out of paper towels. I haven't put a list of groceries yet together so I just stopped by a store to get some. I found a pack of some clearanced out in a cart. And I grabbed some apples on sale for .99 cents lb. But after coming home, I realized we are just about out of milk. I'm going to try to make do, and try to get the grocery list and menu planned.

My daughter got a free banana while we were at the store today, and the rest of lunch at home. But she wanted one of the apples she picked out so she's attempting to finish a whole apple. LOL We also got a free jug of orange juice the other day. It was leftovers from a meeting we went to, and they asked if we'd like it. I am trying to see if I can put off a bigger shopping trip till next week when the new sales cycle starts. And hopefully there will be better deals that week.
