Coins Special Low Spend / No Spend_March 2017

It's already March. If you have travel plans or if you are hosting for Easter, this is the last month to make sure that you have saved the money for your Easter plans next month.

After the extremely warm winter that we have had, I'm not even going to try to speculate what kind of summer we will have. I do recommend that everyone rollover their winter heating savings for summer cooling. Better to have the money saved and not need it, than to need it to pay higher than usual cooling bills and not have it.

For newbies and lurkers: We welcome newbies and would like to have you join us for March and the new year. There are no set rules, you make and follow your own financial rules as well as set your own personal goals. This is not a competition, so don't be over zealous and too aggressive, set personal goals and budgets that you can actually accomplish, but make sure you push forward by not being too lenient or easy on yourself. In other words, make it challenging for you. Each person's circumstances are different, some of us have big families and some of us may be single or empty nesters.

A man in debt is a man in chains. ~James Lendall Basford (1845–1915), c.1882

Who goeth a borrowing; Goeth a sorrowing. ~Thomas Tusser

A man must cut down his outgoings and save his incomings if he wants to clear himself; you can't spend your penny and pay debts with it too. Stint the kitchen if the purse is bare. Don't believe in any way of wiping out debts except by paying hard cash. Promises make debts, and debts make promises, but promises never pay debts... ~Charles H. Spurgeon (1834–1892), "Debt," John Ploughman's Talk; or, Plain Advice for Plain People

Another way to solve the traffic problems of this country is to pass a law that only paid-for cars be allowed to use the highways. ~Will Rogers

Falling into the habit of buying on the installment plan or on the "no money down" plan is a terrible mistake — the day of reckoning is sure to come. Avoid these peddlers as you would a wild beast. Pay as you go, and be debtor to no one. You do not know, boys and girls, what a terrible thing debt is. ~Silas X. Floyd (1869–1923)

The greatest enemy of financial well-being is not poverty but debt. ~Kent Nerburn, "Money and Wealth," Letters to My Son: A Father's Wisdom on Manhood, Life, and Love, 1994–1999

Who recalls when folks got along without something if it cost too much? ~Kin Hubbard

Credit buying is much like being drunk. The buzz happens immediately and gives you a lift.... The hangover comes the day after. ~Joyce Brothers

I am hosting Easter and I already have a big ham in the freezer. I have the makings for 2 of my side dishes and for 2 desserts. I have very little left to buy and I have the time to watch for sales and pick up what I need at a good price.
We paid off a bill in Feb. that was a 240.00 a month payment. I intend to use part of that to put in savings and the other part will be set aside to use on high electric bills for the summer months.

In this month. I did well last month but bad at reporting here on how I was doing. I plan to do better this month.

13 no spend days is my goal. This month I need to get my garden in so there will be some expense there. I have officially finished saving for Christmas so my extra will go towards shoring up my emergency fund, which will be right around $400.

I love all the tidbits of wisdom but I do have one habit I differ from than most...I charge everything over $1 but we both have extremely good control and pay the bill off in full every month. Have never had an interest fee. The bonus for us is we cashed out $1500 in cash from points last year...an added bonus that went right in the bank.

DH and I upped our grocery budget to $175 a month from $125. I am shooting for $150 again this month because I am finding we don't need that much for 2 people with all the produce from gardening. We still have a ton of stuff in the freezer.

At our age we decided we need to plan a few more frugal trips so that is what I will be focusing on this month as well as planning meals around what we have in the freezer.

I am in for March as well. I thought I would be able to stretch out into this month without spending for awhile. But it's not going to happen. LOL However, we did get a lot of stock up items. So, hopefully, we can save a lot more in April! I haven't finished my shopping yet today. But hoping any the rest of the month will be perishables, and stock up! I also really need to work on the recipe binder so I can have more of our meal ideas at hand. Thanks for starting the new thread!
