Just A Note Staples Rewards -- DO NOT ROLL

O.k. so I was unaware that if you used your Staples Rewards on a purchase that produces a Staples Reward, then your next reward check will be less.

I purchased 2 sets of the Duracell Batteries during the get 100% back on your staples rewards promotions. I should have received $19.98 back. However, I used a $6 rewards check that I had, so I wound up only getting $13.98 back.

I called to ask about this and they said that is their policy. In other words it would have made more since for me to spend the $6 on something else (say Postage Stamps) and then Pay Out of Pocket for the full $19.98, so I could receive my maximum reward.

I guess what I meant is that you can roll them, but you will not get 100% back in rewards.

Well, I'll be darned.

Thanks for the information. Is this a new change for them? I guess I better look more closely at the rebates I'm doing.

Default Same thing happened to me

I also did the Duracell rebate (two times as that was the limit). I was supposed to get $19.98 back as well but only got $1.00 because I used a bunch of rewards from another rebate.

I called customer service to complain and was able to convince them to refund me the additional $18.98 but they were sure to tell me that they would only help me out this once.

I had to ask to speak with a supervisor. Did you try that?

I was thinking about this....it's really not right. I don't remember ever seeing this in the small print. If they said we couldn't use Rewards on new Rewards purchases, we wouldn't do it!

Has anyone seen this policy written down in the ads or in the store?

Thanks!

Default Staples rewards

The customer service representative I spoke with told me that the "disclosure" is on their website and is printed on the ad when they advertise the rewards deals.

I don't ever remember seeing it and I do pay a lot of attention to the small print and restrictions on promotions because I have been stuck before. I didn't have the ad to look at anymore and until this reminder, I had forgotten to look on the website. I will go do that now.

Default Staples rewards website

Ok, here is the "disclaimer" I think the customer service agent was referring to. I found it at staplesrewardscenter.com under the link "terms and conditions" and then under the "rewards" section.

Here it is:

The Rewards accounts of Members will receive credit for Qualifying Purchases equal to 10% of their total Qualifying Purchase Amount for purchases made during the applicable calendar quarter if the Reward minimum, as defined below, is met. Qualifying Purchase Amount is the amount paid at checkout after application of all promotions, coupons and Rewards redemption. Amounts spent on taxes, postage stamps, delivery charges, pre-paid phone cards, Staples gift cards and third party gift cards do not count towards earning Rewards.

So....although it seems unfair because you have to earn those reward dollars through a purchase, I guess you would be penalized if you use rewards to pay for items that offer another reward. Kinda reminds me of Wags silly system!!!!!

I didn't ask to speak with a supervisor, but I had another issue. I may call back if I have time. Here is the thing, my last quarterly check was for $6 and I was almot 100% sure it should have been for $12 b/c I turned in my printer cartridges during a double promo period. I asked him about this and he refused to waiver. I told him from now on when I do a promotion, I will hold onto all documentation (i.e. ad) so that I have a ground to stand on. It really irks me.

I am done with arguing about the printer cartridges, but I may call back about the $6 they cheated me on my batteries.

Default I would fight it

It can't hurt to call back and explain that their "rules" on this are not communicated well.

I too recycle a lot of cartridges (10 every month) and haven't had a problem getting my rewards for those. I make a point to keep the cash register receipt that shows the cartridges I turned in just in case there is a problem.

Good luck. Try to speak with a supervisor though about the battery rewards. I wasn't getting anywhere with the representative that initially took my call. Persistance paid off in my case...hope it does for you too!

I had to do the same thing when I used some ink rewards to buy a reward item. If I spend my money on what I need, I should receive the reward to use as I see fit.
