Default CSA's

Has anyone ever been a part of a CSA (Communtiy Supported Agriculture)?

I'm looking into them and thinking about joining one in the spring, just wondering if any one had any experience with one.

I've done it. I've actually participated on three different types of farms. First one was a farm that you actually went to the farm and picked the produce that you wanted. They told you what types and how much, there was some selection but not a ton for example you could have 2 of 3 vegetables. That one had a work commitment but it was pretty easy and not very long. I also participated in a CSA/pick your own berry farm. That was a lot of fun and we got TONS of organic strawberries for cheap. Finally, I participated in CSA at the farmers market. Basically you went to their stand at the farmers market and could select whatever you wanted, however much you wanted. The farm didn't have much variety but you could have whatever you wanted to that was good. It seems like you'd have a ton of produce but you're actually limited by how much you could eat with out it going bad! I think the key for enjoying and getting the most benefit out of a CSA is being really careful when you select the farm. I like fruit and I like to pick my own stuff so I'm always careful to make sure that's part of the deal. I also liked the experience of going to the farm. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

I had looked at this before but until i saw it posted here it didn't occur to me that it might actually save money because I assumed local farmers markets might charge MORE lol.

Has anyone tried using these and had a good result cost wise?

My neighbor did one and really liked it. I have wanted to do it, but haven't found it in my budget to be able to commit yet.

Yes, it is a large up front cost, but overall broken down by week, it is cheaper. The one I joined for the year was $200 (I bought a 1/2 share because it's just hubby and I) and it goes for 20 weeks. $10 a week for fresh veggies is cheap as far as I'm concerned. It kept me from doing a garden this year, time is money!

Default CSA Farm

My husband and I use the local CSA and love it! We pay an upfront cost for the summer season and each weekend we shop on the farm and they deduct from the upfront payment. During the winter you pay an upfront price again but do not choose what you get each week. They pick out the produce, etc for ya and box it. We love the summer cause we also pick fresh herbs, flowers and seasonings. If you have the chance to do this, I highly recommend it. The food is fresh and the cost in the end is much cheaper then what you spend in the store for ORGANIC!

Default Buyer Beware 'Farmer Plot Shares'

I was talking to a friend of mine the other day who told me she heard about a kind of MLM thing somewhere in Oregon and bought into it. IT cost her something like $2100 for a 'share plot' of her own to say what she wanted grown, weekly group phone calls and get shipments of the food it produced. She never saw a single thing from it so apparently some of these things can be fraudulent and it might be a good idea to go on the good experiences of others whom you know or actually go out and visit and see the operation first hand. On the other hand my cousin bought into a well known weekly box service and had a wonderful experience.
