Default Big Lots 20% Off Sale

They have a 20% off storewide Friends and Family sale today, Sunday, July 9. They'll give you a coupon good at checkout for 20% off your entire order.

I saw giant containers of organic Balsamic vinegar yesterday marked down to $2. If I had the storage space I may have gotten it. They have food and some paper products that are reasonable.

I usually buy snack crackers there, but their supply was sort of thin in that dept. Midwestern stores carry canning jars and lids and those are a really good deal with the discount.

Have fun.

Missed the vinegar deal, but hit the food clearance section. Keep an eye on that as they mark stuff down there AND you can get the 20% off.

One thing I did find on clearance mixed in with the regular products was Christmas themed ziploc bags (I've already got tons, so I wasn't tempted). I think they were 2 bucks or thereabouts. So $1.60 or so with the discount. Not great, but if you have a need for them, this is a great stopgap measure until you get a proper sale that will accept coupons. Sadly, the food clearance items weren't very appealing. Lots of granola/snack bars, so chocolate pudding, Orville Redenbacker popcorn, that sort of thing. If you're lucky you can find great deals on a variety of cookies or snack crackers.

I got a pack of 220 Bounty napkins for about $2.40. They regularly retail for $2.80 there and at Target in the $2.99 range, so this was hardly the deal of the century. Their prices have been rising and the deals harder to find. I saw plenty of products like Pantene shampoo or Suave lotion that cost as much as or more than Target's regular retail. Given the unpredictability of their stock and the small savings, how they manage to stay in business is a mystery to me.

I used to get waxed paper and cleaning products there but with the stacked deals at the big box stores or even CVS, they really can't compete re: health and beauty products or cleaning supplies.

Every Big Lots has a 'clearance' section - some have more than one - one for food and one for everything else. If yo can find the food marked down twice, plus the 20% off you have a potential for a GREAT deal there. I buy a lot of expired stuff and never have a problem.

I always check the expired foods section as they often have crackers that are recently past sell by date marked way down.

I haven't been shopping much at Big Lots lately as their prices have continued to climb to the point where their deals are really nothing much. Stores like that have limited and unpredictable stock. They used to factor that inconvenience into their pricing. No longer.

The offerings on Saturday weren't so great, but I had a major score on Starbucks bottled coffee (in the regular food section). The grocery/big box stores around here have quit selling it in favor of bottled capuccino, etc. Honestly, that company (Starbucks) is going to have a good deal to answer for in terms of the youth obesity epidemic. They got rid of their line of less sweet bottled drinks in favor of those loaded with fat and sugar. Gross.

I like just a little milk and sugar in bottled coffee for days when I'm tired but don't have time to grab a coffee. I keep a couple bottles in the trunk of my car. We lived on that stuff on a recent cross country trip when we often didn't have time to make a coffee in the morning. It was just great.

Why they quit selling this is beyond me, but I got 24 bottles at BigLots and so am stocked up for a while now. They were priced at $1.25, so about a buck a bottle, which is reasonable, but even better, the cashier didn't bother to charge me crv (local non refundable bottle charge), so that amounted to an additional $2.40 savings.

They had cheap waxed paper, toothpaste (sensodyne) and a couple boxes of Good Thins crackers (priced at about the regular sale price of most chain supermarkets). The latter were pretty beaten up. $1.99 a box is not a great savings, but the 20% off meant I'd pick up a couple boxes. But at that price, I won't buy many of them, as I once would have done under their older pricing system.

Sadly, their prices have been going up lately to the point where it's absurd to shop there when you can get many of the same items much more cheaply at drugstores or big box stores with coupons and rebate programs. I like to pop in there now and then to look for things that are odd or discontinued. They used to carry inexpensive socks, underwear, canning jars, etc. but no longer. Big Lots in the midwest still carries the canning jars, but they stopped having them several years ago in California.

Surprisingly enough, they just sent me a $5/$15 coupon good for the next couple weeks, so I will probably go back and see if they have anything I can use.
