How exciting about the 2 week Disney trip!!

Losing 80lbs by Nov 1st is a big goal that is challenging but achievable if you really stick with it. Most experts recommend aiming for 1-2 lbs per week (though in the first couple weeks you might lose more due to your new diet changes). Don't freak out if you hit a plateau or have a bad week and gain...stay focused on a health routine you can stick to long term. I plan to keep these threads going all year, so if you are serious about your goal, I look forward to hearing about your progress!!

Good luck with the Weight Watchers too - Will you be doing it by yourself or attending group meetings? Having a support group is important for making healthy choices. Hopefully this group can help with that!

That's great! One thing I also want to do this year is get involved with a group class or fitness club. I've been doing things by myself, and it's not always easy to stay motivated. Knowing that you will be meeting with a friend, or other community members, or that same person you always sit next to in spin class helps make it easier to commit!

Funny you mention yoga....I did a 10 week yoga class once years ago and loved it! It was challenging but also relaxing in many ways. Maybe that will be my goal next month

During the Christmas Day blizzard, DS #1 ran over rocks with our snow blower and the pins broke. DH ordered new pins which still haven't arrived. On the plus side, we have been hand shoveling the drifting snow and we will have to hand shovel this next round. The snow is giving us a great cardio workout.
So sorry to hear that Treasurehouse! I know that weather can be terrible where you are.

You're comment about shoveling being a real workout is SO TRUE and reminds of my many years in Illinois (I've been in sunny California now for almost 2 years and I can't tell you how spoiled I am now because of the nice weather!). About 10 years ago, my parents were building a house in IL and they were trying to get everything framed before winter hit....well of course the snow came WAY early that year, before the roof had been done. So we had to hand shovel several FEET of snow out of the house though the open window and door frames! It was a nightmare and a REAL WORKOUT!

CocoaDiva: Thanks for sharing! I love how you gradually switched things...that's the best approach. If you try to switch from all "unhealthy" foods to all "healthy" foods right away, you are most likely setting yourself up to fail. You need to make changes slowly and let your taste buds adjust. Great examples for other substitutions!

DAY 1 UPDATE:
Very happy that I was able to get in a workout. I did this Tabata strength training routine on YouTube. It was tough but I made it through! I used 5lb weights like she did, but I had to put them down a couple times towards the end of each exercise (I know I will be feeling it tomorrow!). Then went for a 40 minute casual walk outside after while listening to a podcast to cool down.

If you are a newbie, I don't recommend starting with Tabata lol. I'm currently planning to do another workout on Tuesday which will probably be more beginner friendly...I will post that link as well

And with that often comes New Years Resolutions. I saw ConfusedBeginner posted a thread asking about this and I've also seen some chit chat in other "community" forums about different goals people are working towards (I'm a bit of a lurker LOL).

We have AWESOME forums/community support for Finance Challenges and Cleaning/Organization challenges, so I thought I would start one for any HEALTH related goals you might have this year.

This can include (but isn't limited to):
- Eating Healthy
- Exercising
- Quitting Smoking and other "Bad Habits"
- Sleep Goals
- Mental Health / De-stress / Meditation

So, if you have a goal for January, please post it here and keep us updated on your progress to keep yourself accountable! I'll try to check in daily if I can to update about my progress and offer encouragement to others! I hope this will turn into a great thread to share tips about healthy recipes, exercises/fitness, etc.

AND, at the end of the month, I will use random.org to select a number and whoever's post that is will get a $5 PAYPAL bonus (If winner doesn't have PayPal I'll work something else out with them).

I'm sure this doesn't need to be said with the awesome WUCkies we have here, but please be respectful of everyone's goal. We are all at different levels and have different lifestyles. You aren't competing with anyone else here, just yourself

Suggestion: While a trackable goal is not at all required to participate in this thread, it seems to work great in the Low Spend Challenge thread. So consider aiming for X number of days of exercise or healthy eating this month. Or track streaks, like "went for a walk 6 days in a row" or "Days without drinking soda: 20!"

Looking for a health resolution that doesn't involve losing weight? Check these 50 ideas out courtesy of HuffPo.

HEALTH RESOURCES (mostly free - click on names for links):
- Your Local Library: Search for fitness and cook books available in print and e-book format
- Netflix: Streaming documentaries including Fed Up, FoodMatters, Food Choice, Fat Sick & Nearly Dead, Forks Over Knives, Hungry for Change, The Kids Menu, Cooked, Sugar Coated, Vegucated
- Magazines with Fitness, Nutrition, Health Tips: SHAPE, WOMEN'S HEALTH, FITNESS, COOKING LIGHT, PREVENTION
- Websites:
* PopSugar: Fitness link and Healthy Living link
* Food Network: Healthy Food, Fast
* SparkPeople
- YouTube Fitness Channels
* Fitness Blender (their beginner/low impact playlist is HERE)
* Pahla B Personal fitness
* YogaYak

Note: I have not necessarily read/watched all the resources posted above, nor do I endorse there point of view. Just providing suggestions for people to check out, learn from, and decide what does/doesn't work for them.
Can I join? I need and will commit to eating healthy.

I've already cut down on the pop I drink going to more water

I will exercise ,3 times a week.

I will take my meds as I should and test my blood sugars daily

Yes!! You have to switch gradually it so important that the weight come off very slowly, you as an individual adjust to want you like and your goal..

Dh co-workers were so surprised at his weight loss!!! During the winter months you wear more layer clothing." So when the spring pops around he was much smaller...

They saw him eating more healthy foods choice...Then click they understand his weight loss..

Im in. I like how you broke it down to challenges like low spend no spend no drive days. This seems doable. Weight is something ive struggled with for a long time and i always put it last or me last on things to take care of since having kids.now that i broke my foot i feel like its necessary to protect my bones.

Id like to lose 60# by next christmas
Im going to commit for January's goals to
Drinking 8c water daily
Increasing fruits n veggies
Limit take out to 1 x a week if that
No eating or snacking after 8pm
Trying to get 8 hrs+ sleep nightly but this will be difficult with kids and puppy esp bx their sick right now.

1/1
I didn't eat after 8pm. and no fast food.

I agree, Katie. Getting 8 hours is very difficult. That's something I've been trying to do, but it's so much easier to get things done once the kids are in bed, and then after that, I want to sit and try to have a little "me" time watching Netflix or something before bed. That typically leaves me going to bed around 11 pm or midnight.

Good luck on your goals
