Sign Welcome Jan 2017 CHALLENGE - Lose/Maintain (Not Gain) + Healthy Living!

2017 is Here!
And with that often comes New Years Resolutions. I saw ConfusedBeginner posted a thread asking about this and I've also seen some chit chat in other "community" forums about different goals people are working towards (I'm a bit of a lurker LOL).

We have AWESOME forums/community support for Finance Challenges and Cleaning/Organization challenges, so I thought I would start one for any HEALTH related goals you might have this year.

This can include (but isn't limited to):
- Eating Healthy
- Exercising
- Quitting Smoking and other "Bad Habits"
- Sleep Goals
- Mental Health / De-stress / Meditation

So, if you have a goal for January, please post it here and keep us updated on your progress to keep yourself accountable! I'll try to check in daily if I can to update about my progress and offer encouragement to others! I hope this will turn into a great thread to share tips about healthy recipes, exercises/fitness, etc.

AND, at the end of the month, I will use random.org to select a number and whoever's post that is will get a $5 PAYPAL bonus (If winner doesn't have PayPal I'll work something else out with them).

I'm sure this doesn't need to be said with the awesome WUCkies we have here, but please be respectful of everyone's goal. We are all at different levels and have different lifestyles. You aren't competing with anyone else here, just yourself

Suggestion: While a trackable goal is not at all required to participate in this thread, it seems to work great in the Low Spend Challenge thread. So consider aiming for X number of days of exercise or healthy eating this month. Or track streaks, like "went for a walk 6 days in a row" or "Days without drinking soda: 20!"

Looking for a health resolution that doesn't involve losing weight? Check these 50 ideas out courtesy of HuffPo.

HEALTH RESOURCES (mostly free - click on names for links):
- Your Local Library: Search for fitness and cook books available in print and e-book format
- Netflix: Streaming documentaries including Fed Up, FoodMatters, Food Choice, Fat Sick & Nearly Dead, Forks Over Knives, Hungry for Change, The Kids Menu, Cooked, Sugar Coated, Vegucated
- Magazines with Fitness, Nutrition, Health Tips: SHAPE, WOMEN'S HEALTH, FITNESS, COOKING LIGHT, PREVENTION
- Websites:
* PopSugar: Fitness link and Healthy Living link
* Food Network: Healthy Food, Fast
* SparkPeople
- YouTube Fitness Channels
* Fitness Blender (their beginner/low impact playlist is HERE)
* Pahla B Personal fitness

Note: I have not necessarily read/watched all the resources posted above, nor do I endorse there point of view. Just providing suggestions for people to check out, learn from, and decide what does/doesn't work for them.

OK, I'll start.....This year, I really want to focus on STRENGTH TRAINING. I used to be in great shape when I played sports growing up. Then after high school, my weight fluctuated due to unhealthy eating, decrease in activity, and stress (pretty typical stuff). I'm back to being at a healthy weight now, and I love outdoor cardio (I walk to work everyday, to the grocery store, go on nature trails on the weekend etc), but it's been a while since I've done any type of purposeful strength training. So this month I'm going to work on building lean muscle.

Right now, I want to commit to 2-3 strength workouts per week. I've already picked out a bunch of different workouts on YouTube that each last around 30 min and are composed of dumbbell and body weight exercises, so I can do them at home after work.

I also decided to commit to the PACT app. I had downloaded it a LONG time ago, but never actually signed up (was just in trial mode). How it works is you commit to X number of workouts per week (or they have veggie challenge too) and if you meet your goal, you get paid a reward. If you don't meet your goal though, you agree to let them charge your credit card $X. I committed to 4 a week. I have a FitBit, and if I clock in 10,000 steps a day, that counts as meeting my goal, so that's what I plan to do for most days.

Mary, what a great idea. I am not so sure that I'll do well with posting frequently, but I'll join in as I need the motivation. I am not sure yet of specific goals. Right now I'm starting off with just trying to move more. Even little ways to burn more calories. And slowly changing my diet. My main health goal is to fit back into my jeans that I wore before I was pregnant. I'm not good at doing an extreme change, so it's about making healthy habits. I hope others will join as well. Happy New Year!

3 - 4 months ago, DH found a workout machine at Scheels. He researched it, talked to the sales reps, went back in multiple times, took a photo of the tag (name, type, number, price) and said he was buying it. Well, fast forward to today's newspaper ads and sure enough his machine is one sale for $300.00 cheaper. He says tomorrow he will be buying his machine. I guess the empty bedroom is becoming his workout space.

Now, I won't have an excuse NOT to exercise.

Great to have you on board!

Starting slow is a good idea....lots of people burnout on their New Years Resolutions because they start all-in with big changes Jan 1st and then can't sustain it for more than a few days, and they quit.

There are lots of things you can do that don't take much extra time/effort but will get you moving. Click here for 100 simple things you can do courtesy of Prevention Magazine. Some common examples include:
- While watching TV, get up and jog in place during the commercials, or do some jumping jacks or body weight exercises like squats.
- Take a quick walk around the block when you have 5 minutes to spare
- Take the stairs instead of an elevator/escalator whenever possible
- Park in the furthest away spots in the parking lot when shopping so you have longer to walk to get to the store.
- Pace around while talking on the phone instead of sitting down

One thing I am sometimes guilty of is overthinking things and trying to come up with the "perfect" plan before I get started. So I'll spend a month sitting at the computer looking at workouts online trying to find one I think is the "best" for me and ultimately getting nothing done instead of just TRYING something. I have a bunch of workout videos bookmarked on YouTube and this month I'm just going to try all different ones...if it's too hard or there is an exercise I can't do, I'll just skip that part and move on to the next if I need to. I don't have to do everything "perfect," just get moving and give it my best effort!

That sounds like a great deal! I hope he goes through with it tomorrow

Love this thread. I have so many goals mapped out for this year. Basically I need to gain healthy habits, learn how to eat right and even learn how to exercise.

I found a 30 day exercise challenge that I'm gonna try that says it's for a beginner who has never had an exercise routine that really gets you use to taking time each day to do something and get moving.

I've also bought an HP Fitness Planner so I can log everything I eat/drink so I get a good look at what I'm eating and how I can make it healthier. Yeah, this is gonna be the hard one for me so I have to make little changes at a time or I'll quit, I like food too much to just say "no more sugar, no more processed foods, no more . . . "

Good Luck everyone!

Too funny!! It happens to the best of us (me included). But if that's a current pic, it looks nice and sunny outside! No need for that treadmill, when you can walk in the fresh air!
