Ok, you guys got me curious about the ideal weight. It said for me, my ideal is between 133 and 179. YIKES! I did notice, though, it doesn't ask if you're male or female so I'm wondering if they expect women to be on the low end of that span? Can that really be healthy?

Claire: Sorry to hear your DS is sick! Hope he is feeling better soon and that mama doesn't catch it And happy birthday to your DS1! It seems like you established a good workout routine in January which will make it easier to continue it into Feb....congrats on limiting the Starbucks/DD! And even though you fell back into your energy drink habit a bit, I think you are doing well. Progress comes slowly but surely Keep up the good work! Love having you post here - reading about your zumba classes inspires me to get more active!

Lb: So glad to have you join us for this month! Congrats on your 6lb weight loss! I know it may not seem like as big of an amount as you were hoping for, but it really is something to be proud of! Plus, your improved endurance and smaller waist prove that what you are doing is working and making a difference. As for BMI...a "healthy" BMI is between 18.5-24.9 so at 122 you would be on the very lowest end of healthy and 164 would put you on the higher range of healthy. I think BMI can be useful to give you a starting point with a weight range to consider, but there are also a lot of flaws with BMI. It is way less accurate for people who are really short or really tall. And it doesn't really account for fat vs muscle (athletes with lots of muscle who are in great shape will register as having an overweight BMI). Getting to 143 (or 164) is certainly achievable with consistency and patience (don't let me discourage you from aiming for that!), but there are probably plenty of people at your height that weigh slightly more than that and are still in great health. I look forward to hearing more about your progress...congrats on limiting that bakery habit!

Speaking of "weight goals"....While weight is certainly something to measure and monitor, it is not the only thing that is important for your health. If you are looking to notice the changes in your body, there are other things you can measure. You can use a measuring tape to take measurements of your waist, hips, chests, arms, thighs and see how many inches you lose. For physical fitness, you can time how long it takes you to walk a mile (or climb your neighborhood hill, etc). You can record how many sit ups you can in one minute, how many pushups, how many jumping jacks, etc. Then in another month or two, take these measurements again and see the difference. I saw this story from Shape Magazine a while ago and it shows how having some arbitrary number in your head of what your goal weight is can be pointless and sometimes weighing more actually makes you look your best! (Obviously this woman was always at a "healthy" weight, but in terms of her fitness, I think it shows how useless a scale can sometimes be for measuring progress).

BMI is calculated by dividing a person's weight by the square of their height. It's basically looking to see if the weight you are carrying is roughly proportional for your height. It doesn't measure fat directly (one of it's flaws) but it tends to be closely related to the amount of fat you have for most people. Basically it is useful as a screening tool (if your BMI is too high or too low, you may be at risk for certain disease or have issues with your metabolism, or be engaging in unhealthy behavior, etc). The healthy range is just an approximation. Some people are very petite and have slim frames and naturally don't carry a lot of weight and might be perfectly healthy in appearance and medically at the low end of the range. Others may have larger frames, more muscular and healthy at the upper end of the range. Like I said, lots of athletes have higher BMIs (25-30 range), even though they are in great shape due to their increased muscle mass. So don't freak out too much about BMI. If you are at the upper end of the healthy BMI range or even above it but are otherwise healthy according to your doctors (cholesterol, blood pressure, fitness abilities, etc), then I don't think you have anything to worry about.

So for anyone setting a weight loss goal, don't feel like you have to get to the lower or middle part of that BMI range. Just losing 10% of your current weight can make a huge difference according to most experts, even if that still puts you in the "overweight" category technically.

Thanks for posting this! I was typing my other responses when Laura was posting and I didn't see her comment, so I appreciate you mentioning it!

Laura: You should be very proud of losing 17-20 pounds! I know that depression can make weight loss extra challenging. Mental health issues run in my family, and I work for a large non-profit that focuses on mental health for children and families. I have also dealt with my own issues (though I am more on the anxiety end of the spectrum than depression). I am glad to hear you are managing your depression better As they say, one day at a time! Keep up the good work. Look forward to hearing from you again this month We are here for you!!

Monkeystyle: Excited to have you join us!

February Goals:
January was a good start, but February I want to get more serious about my strength training goal. As I said a few days ago, I have decided to workout 3x a week on Mondays, Thursday and Saturdays. That will mean 12 strength training workouts in February. I also want to continue getting in my daily 10,000+ steps which I track via my FitBit. I am already achieving this activity level most days out of the month, so I will aim to hit my step goal for at least 25/28 days of February.

I would also like to try out some new recipes this month, but that will be an informal goal for now. I find it easier to focus on one thing at a time, and I really want to turn the strength training into a habit since I know it is very important for your health (and for women especially since many women don't strength train due to the myth that it will make them bulk up).

Well DS2 is sick so I didn't send him to school, I took him to zumba, stuck him in the stroller w his tablet and he stayed put the whole class!! I never let them play over 20 minutes a day so he was excited about it lol. He is napping now, poor thing. But if I catch it at least I worked out Monday and Tuesday so far this week!! DS1 bday tmrw so we will not be eating healthy, but that's ok, just got keep it to a day and go right back into healthy eating thursday.

I'm happy w how January went as far as workout routine. The Zumba my friend found is cardio and then spends the end of class doing abs/core which is where I wanted to focus, so I'm just having to do one more cardio and one more core day per week aside from the class. It's a pretty good routine. I haven't quite kicked energy drink habit, lol but that will come!! I was doing OK w it and then the kiddos got sick and up half the night and I don't get a chance to sleep, so...I think this month I will try and limit to every other day, max, and never have one on the same day as when I have time to drink my coffee. Also I was going to Starbucks/DD too much and January I set a goal of 1x/week but I think I only went one time all month since we got back from trip!! Yah!!!
I cant believe dd1 wilk be 5 in 3 days. Time has, flown. You did so well cuttin back on your trips to sbucks keep up good work. It also helps financially.
I didnt kicm dt pop habit but i need caffeine too to get me thru my sleepless nights with kiddos.

I began Jan. 1, relaunching my healthier eating habits, including portion size control, and committing to cutting out my Safeway bakery addiction.

I last weighed in at a medical clinic six weeks ago, and again today. I've lost six pounds (today I'm 213). I know 1-2 lbs. is a reasonable goal, but I was expecting a lower number on the scale.

On the brighter side, I've doubled my walking time, included a steep hill, and feel better with more energy. I might be gaining muscle (a little bit), which weighs more than fat. I think I'm losing a bit around my waist.

www.webmd.com's BMI for my height says my ideal weight is 122-164. Not sure why that range is so big. So I averaged it for a goal of 143, so I need to lose 70 lbs.

I lost 40# 6-7 years ago, walking + healthy eating, and Dr. said I no longer needed blood pressure RX's. Truthfully I cannot see me hitting 164, let alone 143. Well, maybe 164.

I already eat only 100% whole grain bread and pasta, and have cut back drastically on those, subbing veggies + lean b/s chicken breasts or ground turkey breast.

In Jan. I only had one bakery purchase, which for me is great. I make sure not to go anywhere near the bakery. I only have a little Christmas clearance chocolate here.

Look forward to encouraging everyone and checking in often!
That sounds like my range too. My lowest i was 160 before kids before dh and ove several years i packed it on. I have about that much total to lose i know it wont happen over night but im ok with that. Like mary said its also not just about numbers i wanna feel good too.
