Default Dumpster Diving for Organic Produce and more

I found this link via the video piece that Doodlebug posted here: http://www.weusecoupons.com/upload/d...light=dumpster
The woman in the video in the dumpster has a website. This website of hers is amazing as to what she and others have been finding. This is your trash, America

I'm still amazed at how much food gets thrown away instead of donated to shelters, etc.

Zaycon foods sells boxes of chicken, fish, kielbasa, hot dogs, bacon, fruit and more (sales at certain time of year for your area. - Sign up is free to see when the sales are!). Signature and posts may contain affiliate links.

It infuriates me that we have hungry men, women and children in the US and so much perfectly good food is being thrown away.. It is sickening and needs to be stopped.. We send money over seas, we send money to all third world countries. What about our people here living in boxes, cars, and where ever else they can find shelter. This is wrong on so many levels and I wish I was brave like her and could do something like that.. It is just unfair and makes me so sad to see.

May 13 th Thats my kitchen. That seems to be the place for him to take the dumpster diving pics. May 15th he brought home Strawberries. He took a pic of the bowl and cake in the oven. I picked the very few bad ones out. The best strawberry shortcake I had ever had. I will have to check the rest of the picks.

Love your blog! If you can get free food by diving... go for it! We used to when we lived in the city for a while. I'd still do it if the stores in town didn't have theirs in padlock areas.

I can tell you from the years that I worked in restaurants that the reason a lot of stuff is dumped instead of donated is because of the fear of lawsuits if something is spoiled. It is awful but that is the truth. You can pick it out of the trash yourself but places will not take it.

I can remember as a child that we used to do "gleaning" for the poor families once the farmers had done their harvesting. You want to talk about a freakin' bonanza!!!!! The potatoes we could pick up with no effort at all was just sick! If any of you live near commercials farms, ask about doing this as well. Very often the produce is just too small or not perfectly shaped but is otherwise great!

We are able to glean from a farmer here - tomatoes and pumpkins . There's another farmer in the area that opens his fields up for a price -- $5 for a 5 gallon bucket of green peppers, $8 for a $5 gallon bucket of tomatoes. Plus we can buy seconds on apples at the nearby apple orchard.... used to be $5 to $8 for a box but it has gone up over the years. Used to even get 5 gallon buckets of the "culls" for $1... those aren't offered anymore.

When my kids were little Laura I would make tons (and I do mean TONS!!!!!) of applesauce in every combo you can imagine. I would freeze up berries during all their peak seasons and blend it into sauce for alll kinds of yummy stuff. Anywho, apples were always so much for even pick your own but I asked if I could pick bags of drops and they would let me get some but not a ton.....they make fresh pressed cider so they wanted to use most of it themselves but wow...what a deal that was!

Tell me about the pumpkins though. Other than for pie how do you use them? I love the flavor of pumpkin but other than pie, pumpkin rolls, and other naughty desserts I wouldn't know what to do with it.
