Hadn't heard that one before, but then again I normally donate some school supplies along with body wash, shampoo, etc. Did not do this this year as I hadn't had the money to stock up on anything for others as I was stockpiling for my family for a change.

Now, I'm doing this with the feminine packs. And if feels so good to do this. Giving to women and girls is something that I love to do. I took out a few and gave them to a shelter, and have the rest to give to the schools. I only wanted to do a middle school and high school. I've decided today to donate to the elementary schools. I feel like they get overlooked sometimes for feminine product donations, compared to shelters, middle, and high schools. I remember a few 5th graders when I was in school that started their periods and were developing already. One of my friends as a child and twin girls that I tutored recently started in the 4th grade. Now when I look back on it, I think about how young that really is. I have some special packs for them. Maybe I'll upload a picture or two...they are too cute if I do say so myself! With the upcoming free Stayfree at CVS and the gift card that I have to pay the tax, if I have time, I'll probably do more packs! |

That's a great thing you're doing. And thanks for thinking of elementary schools too. I teach sixth grade and like I said most of my girls have already started and I know some did in 5th grade. And as unbelievable as it sounds about a month or two ago I heard from one of the other teachers that a 3rd grader started. That's just unbelievable.

We don't have vending machines either. We are a small school with about 300 kids in K-6. We are barely able to pay one maid.

I've never heard of this type of policy either, but I'm assuming it's about TSS as others mentioned.
This is a really great thing you are doing. My daughter is 11 and in the 6th grade. I helped her hide a pack of pads in her room. I've talked to her about how/when to use them. I know the school nurse keeps some pads available in the office. They also do a health class and separate boys from girls since each class is geared towards genders. They hand out coupons and samples while discussing what they are for. Girls are starting earlier and earlier. A lot of it has to do with the hormones, steroids, and such that they add to foods/beverages. Earn gift cards just for doing searches, FREE! Other earning options are available. Thank you! You are a true difference maker! So many elementary girls are in need of supplies - some due to forgetfulness and others because of finances. School is obligated to ensure that all girls can participate fully in learning and so give any girl who asks supplies. However, the quality of those supplies varies widely AND at the elementary level it is often limited ONLY to pads. The reason for pads alone is the wide age range of girls who may request supplies. Most schools therefore have policies that allow a nurse to only give pads as no one wants a very young girl to use a tampon unless her parent is aware and she has been provided with proper training in the use of them. Even with proper training in the use of tampons, girls at this age are at an increased risk of TSS. What prompted you to create and share the period packs with the school? I'm interested in learning more about your activism. This is the sort of thing I write about on Period Wise.
