I feel so bad for him. He isn't married but takes care of my mom, stepfather and 90yo grandmother which all live with him. I thought they would have had some kind of class to inform/prepare him for what to expect and the changes that are going to happen. But they haven't, he is scared to death. He was told be there Mon at 12 surgery would be at 1.

Oh, I am so sorry.

In my mother in laws case they taught her everything after the surgery. It is hard to understand what to do until you see everything. The nurses let me know when the were going to teach her so I could be up there also to learn. I would say they worked a couple hours a day for the 2 days. She then had a nurse come to the house for a couple times a week for awhile til she was comfortable doing it on her own.

MomWalker, I'm praying for your brother and your family.

I will be thinking of your family! Is this a permanent solution or is it temporary. The nurses will teach him everything he needs to know, and will hopefully teach a family member in case he needs help. If he will be home bound, even if it's just for a couple weeks, he should be able to get a home health worker to come in 2-3 times a week to help him. It's a scary thing, but can be a very manageable solution. Depending what part of the colon is removed he may be able to go without the bag for a while (in the distant future).

Suggest that he joins an ostomy support group such as this one: Ostomyland | Ostomy Support Community - Online Since 1998! They will be able to help him through this, and it'll be nice for him to be able to talk to other people who have also been through it!

I will keep your brother in my prayers. There should have been something offered to your family like you said to inform them of whats to come. Hopefully the link posted will also provide you with some helpful information. come. From what you have said about your brother, he sounds like an incredibly awesome man. God will see him through this! We will keep him and your family in our prayers!

Thanks for the prayers and the link. Yes it is permanent. They have told him that even with the surgery it was 50% chance of the cancer not coming back. Like most households were several have health issues they all just take care of each other depending on who needs help on that particular day. I am supposed to go today and see if they need anything and drop off some hba items. My little grandmother has really taken this hard, the stress and worry for him has really caused her to not be having good days too. Now I am worried for both of them.
