Help Returning Items You Paid for with Coupons---Your Opinion.

So, I wanted to buy some fruit snacks at Safeway with the catalina deal. Turns out that I didn't buy the right kind of fruit snacks. My catalina didn't print and after I contacted Catalina Marketing they said the Sunkist variety wasn't included.

So, I went to return them today. No sense buying then if they aren't free

When I had bought the fruit snacks, I used the betty crocker 50/2 coupons for the fruit snacks plus (3) 1.25 catalinas to pay for my fruit snacks. My receipt total was $1.15

The store said they could only return $1.15 to me. Normally, I would understand, but since I used catalinas to pay, this made me angry. I can't just get those catalinas back by finding more coupon inserts. I tried to explain, but they wouldn't budge.

I decided not to do the return.

What's your opinion?

Catalinas are coupons too, regardless of where it come from. And, unfortunately most stores policy is that you forfeit coupons and their value if you return an item. I think it's fair, and it cuts down on people who use coupons, then try to return for cash.

I think safeway has a weird refund system- maybe you could explain it to the manager and see if they could do a no receipt return, that way the fruit snacks would ring up at sale price then scan the ones you want and it should pop out the Catalina-- I don't know about your store, but they might be willing if you got someone who understood the system and policies well and who knew the Catalina/ coupons thing well. If they say no, I would just keep them! They are worth more than 1.15!!

I understand people misusing coupons- like using coupon and then returing for cash. However I feel they need to give you cash. It is the same to the store at that point. The store will still get the money from the manufacture. And if you are returning an item they can resell it.
I have always gotten money back for my coupons I used.
I would talk with a manager-
Let us know if you keep them or go back

That's a good idea. I wonder if the registers at customer service print catalinas.

That's such a tough one. Yes, it was like money out of your pocket but also the coupons have no value themself. Yes the store "probably" gets the money from the mfg but stores get screwed out of redeeming coupons ALL THE TIME.

I think what would be fair was if the store gave you some sort of credit for the amount. That way you have to use it in their store and pretty much whatever you buy they make 50% on so it sort of splits it to you both.

I would just ask to do an exchange, not a refund...last week when they had the coffee/tea deal they were out of the millstone decaf, so after 4 trips to see if they had the decaf and they didn't i bought 9 of the reg coffee and I took them back several days later when they had decaf.. took the reg to cs and asked for exchange, the gal said I don't think we can do that but tried and it worked... I'd used all my $2 coupons .....so ask for exchange when you use coupons on an item. .. also they can bring up your purchase on their computer and that can be helpful

We don't usually get fruit snacks, even when they're free. Not sure what made me do it this time...now I wish I hadn't

I will no longer return any food items after learning what happens to any food items you return for a refund or even exchange and it all gets tossed into the trash and the stores can not resell any food that comes back into the store even if it was just to the car and back in the door.
I made a mistake and bought the wrong juice one day and brought it back in and I only walked to the car and back into the store and the gal at customer service put a huge sticker on the side and it said "DO NOT RESTOCK" and I asked why she did that and she said it can't be resold and I told her I only walked to the car and right back in and she said it didn't matter and so I asked what they did with the juice and she said they have to toss it in the trash so I felt horrible for even bringing it back in and it was a total waste of good juice and the store also took the losses for not being able to resell it.
SO when you make a mistake and bring food back it will end up in the trash and you might want to just live with your mistake and keep it or know it will get trashed and the store takes the losses.

IMO, it depends on what you feel comfortable with doing. If the store can't restock the item to sell then it is a loss for them even with an exchange. Is the $3 worth it in this situation? It does make me wonder though why they can't resell it? We donate food to a local food pantry/charity food drives. Even if the store can't sell it then it should be donated not thrown in a landfill. As long as the packaging is unopened/untampered with then what is the problem? In terms of using a q and CAT as payment IMO you should get all the money back. The store has sent the q/CAT for reimbursement so they are not out anything on that end. I know I have to sign stuff on some returns so they should just keep track to see if you do this frequently. IMO, as long as you aren't doing it all the time for fraudulent purposes then it shouldn't be a problem but I don't manage the store :-)
