Add a Sticky'd Thread somewhere for people to report spelling errors - this way if/when any are made {in the important places like forum indexes and such} they can be caught/corrected and the site looks more professional.

Create clear and concise forum rules, sticky them and enforce them uniformly. This way you can refer specifically to what rule someone broke if you need to edit their post, close a thread or whatever. This is necessary to treating forum members the same and as adults we're all able to step back and then say "oops, my bad" instead of feeling like the "slap on the wrist" came from nowhere.

Don't overpopulate your forum with countless Mods. Too many cooks and all that. Post somewhere who is who and what they're in charge of. A largely silent Admin suddenly popping up and laying down the law usually feels intrusive to the members.

Instead of Threads for each state, create a sub-forum for each state {this was something I'd /just/ suggested at the other site and they'd done} this way members from different regions can share regional tips/deals/arrange coupon swaps, etc.

Don't charge for anything. Asking for donations to help pay server costs is fine. But once you start charging for certain "privileges" you owe it to your members to detail the costs involved in site upkeep and how their money is being spent. If you're fine with saying "we have XXX number of members now and need to pay XXX amount of dollars to keep the servers up and running with so much traffic and we have XXX number of people paying XXX of dollars and are breaking even or making a small profit" then fine, ask people to pay. I don't even care if Admin or other staff are paid a salary, just be upfront with that.

I'll have more suggestions. But for now I must go retrieve my little one from school.

Great ideas. We really need the spelling correction thread, as I know MrC and he is a worst speller then I am. LOL

I like the state sub forum idea a lot. What do you think of a metro area/state thread instead. Many cities cross state lines. I think we could do metro areas and it would be more beneficial. For instance we live in KY, but just across the river from Cincinnati, OH. Also much of southeast Indiana would be in the Cincy thread also. So a KY thread wouldn't do us much good, but a metro Cincy thread would be great.

We are not planning on charging for anything. I hope Nathan never does.

No we wont't hate you ever, I promise. We may not be able to do all the thinkgs you suggest, but If it is a good idea why not try it.

The one thing that I have learned over the years (too many years now) is it takes several tries to get things right. The worst thing to do is not try. So keep the suggestitions comming.

BTW we tried a spell checker when we first started the forum and it was a complete disaster. It tries to check every word everytime a new page was displayed. So as of now your on your own for spelling.

Ditto with the spell checker....it was an add-on with vb software....it caused the site to REALLY slow down and crash often.....I would suggest firefox, which has a built in spell checker....as you can see...i'm TERRIBLE at grammar & spelling....

I do like idea about posting spelling problems....i'm not to proud to admit that I'm an awful speller...if you see a misspelling...let me know!!!

I think the auctions section would be better split into the finished auction and the active ones and of course the talk of auctions.

Yeah, using Spell Checker for individual posts is a bad idea. There is some merit to allowing people's natural misspelling to "shine through".....I meant an area for people to report ....how to put it, SITE spelling errors, not Member spelling errors? So if there's an error in the actual names of forums or the Sticky'd rules or whatnot....those are important to get right.

Metro areas are good too. We could always take a page from Craigslists book, they have State sites and metro sites both......So you could {well you could go completely rip them off and take the metro areas straight off their list} and then have State AND Metro sub-forums. For instance, I'd be involved in an Oregon sub-forum AND a Salem area sub-forum. This would foster friendships between metro areas and allow for mulit-region merging for donation drives, etc.
