Having a 72 hour kit is a great idea for anyone. Whether you live in natural disaster areas of the country where you may need to leave quickly for whatever reason, or you have other reason to want to have a quick to-go bag. Christmas is a great time to add a few bits and bobs to your gift giving to help build up those bags. Many of these things you might already have in your stockpile, or are easily added to a stockpile to help out!
Most of these can make great little stocking stuffers and are perfect for a To-Go bag or a car box for emergencies. Add to the list! 1. flashlights 2. batteries 3. bandaids 4. quick energy foods that store well (granola bars, etc) 5. whistle 6. waterproof matches/kindling 7. bic-type lighter/kindling 8. Toiletry kit (shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, etc.) 9. dental floss (can be used for toiletries as well as for tying things 10. emergency blanket (not the cheapest you can find as those aren't worth much) 11. heavy duty garbage bag (great for rain protection, sleeping mat, and many other things) 12. all-in-one tool or knife. 13. blanket 14. Hat/goves/scarves - even if you're in a warmer climate, winter nights can be chilly if not downright frigid, and a little extra layer of warmth would be welcome 15. Water - fun water bottles/canteens for the kids, stainless steel water bottles that can clip to the outside of a backpack, water bottles or water pouches. 16. Eating utensils....small plates/all in one utensils. Some of these things can be geared towards kids fun type objects as long as you remember to always store them in a pack after use. This list is NOT inclusive, but to get you thinking about what stocking stuffers you can buy if you're still in need of ideas. Add your own ideas to the thread! |

We received an emergency kit as a gift and it has come in handy many times!! Just make sure to check it and restock occasionally as some items expire. A good time would be when changing smoke detector batteries!

One thing that is pretty inexpensive (compared to buying kits) is to put together an emergency binder for family members. I'm doing that this christmas and I'm going to use the inexpensive folders we got at school start. (I know ink and paper can get pricey but I figure after 4 binders I'm only spending about $5 per binder so its not too much for me.) I've found lots of free printables on various websites and I'm going to pick my favorites and the ones that are most applicable to my area and I'm also going to have a page of our local utility companies with information on how to turn off and who to call in case of downed lines or natural gas leak, etc.

Another thing that is a great that I bought a couple years ago a set of 3 flashlights that had a removable base with a storage area and a seperate case of waterproof matches in a little orange case that fits perfectly inside. The flashlights are great because not only do they do a white regular beam but also will flash red in the handle in addition to solid beam. I keep one in the driver door pocket - very handy.
The flashlights are very similar to this one from Emergency Essentials - slight differences in the body. I put one of these in each of the flashlights. Last edited by tsimshiangoddess; 12-17-2012 at 09:28 PM.. Reason: additional info & links |

So I went digging and found this site for home organization and she has made some amazing FREE printables also. So I'm going to take some of the relevant pages from the Organizing Lady and incorporate some of my own things based on pages from the Grab N Go and then add in local utilities emergency numbers, customer service numbers, and a car emergency list. nothing too major since my family is definitely not into prepping, but just some basic things to get them through. I am working on a Master Binder here so that we can have all of the Emergency, Medical, Utility, and personal papers all together. I'm still working on this though since its alot of paperwork to sort through and figure out what is releveant to an emergency and what can be filed normally. If you start googling Emergency Binders or Family Preparedness Binders or Organized Home Binders you can find tons of websites with lots of information - you just have to pull out what is relevant to you. |
