Just A Note in case of a "hey mom!! do you have...???""

SUCCESS to the foresight of stockpiling extras of useable goods for minor SHTF type of scenario!

With the last 3 and a half days of that 4-letter word,,frigid temps, housebound(by choice, and work facilities being shut down) the son, the behemouths and I survived.

The " acquiring of "excess" goods when not actually needed at the time bought, served its purpose. I was able to fulfill every single one of my sons "do u have, have u got"? wants.

Stockpiles of "stuff"(a word used by others when they have no clue) served its purpose when
the son was getting ready for work last night(fed-ex,hes a tug operator and sorter)

Hes running around asking: " have any extra gloves mom",, I walk to the hall closet and pulled out a zippered bag, riffled thru its contents, hand him an extra pair.(20 extra prs bought on clearance 2 yrs ago)
.
He stuffs em in his GHB(get home bag) turns

around with boots in hand
and asks "have any extra thermal socks mom"?
I go back to riffling thru zippered bag and pull out two pairs of clearance thermals from Home Depot.(15 prs bought on clearanced 3 yrs ago) He puts a pair on and shoves the other in his GHB..

As hes walking out the door I ask if he has matches/lighter.Yes he does. I hand him a large jarred candle (scads bought thruout the yrs at garage sales/thrift stores/gifts)and he asks. "whats this for"?

Told him IF he were to be sbowbanked/stranded/ car not running ,to light the wick of this jarred candle and it will keep the temp in the car "reasonable" along with keeping his hands warm. He chuckles but humours me in taking the candle as hes telling me he has handwarmers. (bought at Walgreens, clearanced-2 yrs ago)

Fast forward 12 hrs later(8 am this morning) He walks thru the door. in one piece, reasonably warm and in good spirits..He sits down to eat his fastfood breakfast and asks " Got any chapstick mom"?
Tell him that after last night of "do u have, have u got" and all being answered with the wanted item. you are actually gonna ask DO I have chapstick? Well of course I DO son!

I just so love the "but I don't need it now, yeah but what about 6 months from now? a yr from now"? arguments I have with myself. The "may need it at a later date" side of the argument usually wins.
.

How many others have stories of "glad to have "excess of_____but gonna get it anyways" stories?

LOL Oh I love it! It is so true with boys! And with myself sometimes. I ask my son leaving to go back to college. Do you need any Tide? He said no of course. It's hard sometimes for all of us to see three or six months down the road.

Same thing happened at my house! One of the DS's also works for a shipping company in Management. However, due to extreme cold weather, folks called in sick. Managers were called in to work on the airplane ramps and Load planes. I had plenty of socks, gloves, hats, thermacare heatwraps, and I am so glad I stockpiled extra supplies. I have the flu since 12/28 and my DH and DS's are holding down the Fort, so to speak. Their only request: Do we have chips and Pizzas?
Well, of course we do. So glad I met the wuckies and changed the way I shop.

Btw, if you stuff thermacare heat wraps inside yr clothing- it keeps you Toasty warm for 8 hours!

Shhhh! Be va-wee, va-wee quiet. Dee is shopping for bargains!

Awesome! I wish I was that prepared, but just way to limited on space. Love the candle idea, plus it will make the car smell good when it gets warmed up just sitting around(we used them as car fresheners in college). My DH finally understands why I like to always have at least 1 backup of everything. Our neighbors are always running out of things, especially dog food, and have to run out at all hours to pick some up, it drives us crazy. Great job op!

I think that was the first reason I started to coupon. My kids would come up to me at like 5 minutes to bedtime and say "oh, Miss X asked us to bring a bag of candy, or chips or an extra set of coloring pencils", or "I need new crayons/glue/whatever" and it frustrated me to no end. Too late to do anything about it and they need it for the next day. So, I started stockpiling. And that feeling of not having something I need at a moments notice, disappeared.

Now, the kids know to look in the storeroom for foodstuff and in the cupboard for the schoolstuff. There is always more. And I love not feeling the anxiety or the anger about them forgetting to tell me stuff. Now I feel like superwoman - ready and able and prepared for anything!

omgosh!! ur quite welcome.. the jarred candle even works in a house w/o heat when one creates a makeshift tent( several blankets arranged over a couple of chairs, or over a dining room table.) I would leave a small opening when I pulled the blankets together just to create a small flow of fresh air. It got us thru the night several yrs ago till the power kicked back on...
