jfred - i've found canning jars on freecycle and at yard sales. Also I participate in a canning group, they're an hour away from my home but they taught me alot about canning and we can together a few times a year, they also have arranged for a bulk sale discount on canning jars at agway. the local agway will give us a great discount if we order at least 8 cases of each size desired and pick them up prior to the summer canning season. It's not free but it's a good deal and we get exactly the sizes we want. you might want to look for a canning group near you, their a great resource in soo many ways.

Hello All

It's been a busy few days, but I did get quite a few things accomplished inside and out, so I reckon it was worth all the hustle and bustle! Sunday, I got up early and went in to town to do the grocery and deal shopping that I was too tired to do on Saturday. Came home and changed beds and washed and hung the sheets out to dry; then re-made the beds. Did some fridge cleaning and put some meat on to marinate before we went outside where we mowed and trimmed the yard, and got Hubby's shop straightened up and swept out. Then I went out to the garden and planted more potatoes, sweet potatoes, and some herbs. Hubby was kind enough to grill supper while I took a nice long shower, then we relaxed for the rest of the evening.

Monday was more laundry, dishes, and general cleaning. I tried to take a nap before work, but wasn't able to between the heat and the neighbor across the road and his friends target shooting - I'd just start to drift off and they'd blast through another mag and wake me up, or I would get too hot and have to flip my pillows over and move to a cooler spot on the bed. I finally got tired of it and just got up and worked on pulling expired Qs from my binder before heading in to town to work.

I got off work on Tuesday morning and ran a couple of errands, then headed for home. I'd called Hubby before I left work and asked him to turn on the air conditioner - it hadn't cooled off much during the night and I had some hot kitchen work planned. I thought my Aunt was coming out to make jam that afternoon, so I had to hurry and clean house before she got here LOL!! Ran in to town to pick up the two 10# boxes of strawberries I'd ordered, then came back home to finish up the cleaning. Got started stemming the berries and finished one box before I finally figured out that she wasn't coming, so I called her and we decided that she'd come out on Thursday instead. Finished stemming the other box and made a bowl of coleslaw and was heating the grill when Hubby got home from work. After supper, he crushed part of the berries for me and we put those ones in a big container in the fridge; then I sliced the rest and he vac sealed them and put them in the freezer. By that time, I'd been awake and going for about 27 hours, so I collapsed in the bathtub and took a nice long soak/nap before climbing out and heading to bed.

Got called in to work an 8 hour day shift today; wasn't too bad until we had 6 trauma patients come in to ER at one time from a bad MVA - semi vs van; staff was pulled from all over the hospital to help, and I had to go down from our unit, and was there for 3 hours; remembered why I don't work ER, and gave my Hubby points for being able to do the work down there.

Ran a couple of errands on the way home (1/2&1/2 for my coffee, more $3/pk diapers from Wags) and was grateful to get home to the peace and quiet. Filled the hummingbird feeders and made more feed, carried water and scraps to the chickens, took out the compost, fed the cats, and then gave in and nuked a leftover pork tenderloin and had it with some slaw and carrot sticks - I didn't have time for breakfast before I left for work, and didn't have time to eat lunch at work, so I just couldn't make it until Hubby got home from work before I ate something! After I ate, I got the kitchen ready to make jam; then flopped down on the couch for a 1/2 hour nap before Hubby got home; chatted with him while he ate supper, then once the supper mess was cleaned up, started in making jam. Made 2 batches, but was too tired to do a third one tonight.

Tomorrow is another work night, I've got another box of berries ordered, and my Aunt is supposed to come out to make jam. I'll need to sweep and mop the kitchen floor and give the bathroom a buff and fluff; then carry up more jelly jars from the storeroom and get them washed and ready to go before she gets here. Hopefully I'll get that all done before they call me to come pick up my berries! Not sure how much jam she'll want to make, but I'm hoping to be down for a nap by 1 pm.

Well, if I'm going to get up early, I guess I'd better go get my shower and head for bed. Here's hoping that you all have a restful night's sleep; and a wonderful day tomorrow!

Kallen-glad to hear your safe!
Aunt Elner-good to hear from you as always!
Not too frugal of a morning for me--I have to go to Ky. for my Mammogram, Blood tests and pick up that awful stuff you must drink before you get a CT Scan. Then hurry home for Hubby to get ready for work.
I enjoyed the peace and quiet last night soo much. The phone was unplugged and no phone calls. I made a list of things I want to get done for June.
I went through some of my fabric I bought 2 years ago and found some I can use to make curtains
for my sewing room. I will get started on that today.
This evening I will finish going through my expired coupon's.
breakfast-strawberry muffins
lunch-griled chicken salad
dinner-meatloaf, mashed potatoes and peas.

Morning. I am wanting to go back to bed. But that is an everyday scenario--I just hate waking up! hahaha! But w/ 2 cups of coffee in me, there's little chance I'd conk back out! Just lie there in the quiet.

Thanks, mcmartian! hmmm, a canning group--sounds fun! I look all the time on craigslist--but others are looking, too. There was an older couple who used to do yard sales during the summers here--and they'd have all kinds of glass stuff out--they probably had a ton of canning jars. I haven't seen them set out yet this yr.....

Wow, a helicopter just went overhead and talk about being LOW. wow. I don't have to see it to know it's low--we've always been stationed by helicopter units--so I can hear low! hahaha! Surprised the kids didn't go check and holler about it.

My garden is looking perky this am. Everything is growing so nicely. Waiting for the fruits/veggies to come forth is hard now! I keep thinking I'll go out and green beans will be everywhere--those plants are GROWING! So are the squash and the cukes. Makes my little heart so happy! Kids love it, too.

We have piano this am, so we stay at home. Kids need baths--ugh--the dirty feet are killing me! hahaha! My DS and dirt..... I vacuumed the house last night and did up the dishes while waiting for hubby to come home before bed. So the bathroom will need a wipe down (after bath), and we should be good to go for the teacher to come by.

Blueberry muffins + mandarin oranges for bfast today. Probably sandwiches for lunch. Pork chops, green beans, and rosemary potatoes for dinner. (last night we had oatmeal w/ frozen strawberries to cool it down.)

I'm sure there's more laundry to do today....always!

Have a lovely day!

FINALLY got my garden all planted Sunday! We had sooo much rain lately that we couldnt even till so when it dried up a bit I rushed to get EVERYTHING in right away, lol. We ended up with a pretty big garden really, I planted onions, LOTS of beans, cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, zuccinni, eggplant, radishes, carrots and TONS of peppers (bells, japs and habaneros). I still need to transplant some maters and make a spot for my new raspberry bushes. I'm so excited and cant wait to eat from it, lol. Now its just the ' hurry up and wait' process.

We spent most of yesterday outside doing yardwork.....well I did while the kids played in the kiddie pool and sprinkler. Then we walked out to the woods out back to collect firewood. Summer has officially kicked off and there is no way I'll be able to afford gas to go anywhere. We decided to make the most of what we have here at home and try to build strong memories with our children. They are still pretty young, which makes it easy not to blow a bunch of money and they dont feel like they are missing out on anything. Plus we really get to put our imagination to work, lol.

We'll be catching up laundry today, finally get to start hanging it out on the line for the summer. The dryer just heats up the house and burns up the electric bill. My 4 year old just loves carrying the clothes pin basket and handing pins up to Mommy. She's learning to fold laundry too

Yard sale season is here!! So my process for yard sales works like this: I have my yard sale fairly early in the season. Then use the profits at other people's yard sales in hopes of finding things I'm looking for. It worked great for us last year so I'm crossing my fingers that it goes without a hitch this year, lol. Anyways, I have about a week to get everything up from the basement that needs to be cleaned for the sale. We gathered up a couple poster boards, (still looking for more) letting the kids make the signs for advertising. Also gotta come up with stickers or something for pricing.

I ended up with an abundance of pears and saw a recipe for pear butter, YUM. Gonna give it a shot in the crockpot, I cant wait to smell up the house with it!

Someone above metioned cleaning out the expireds from the binder. Thanks for the reminder

Later this evening (when everyone is in bed) I want to work on this month's dinner menu. Gonna flip through old recipe books, I have over 30 of them that have been collecting dust for years. Frankly, I musta been living under a rock all this time......I still cant believe how this website and the people here have COMPLETELY changed my life. I LOVE to cook now!! (Now that we actually have food that is)

Breakfast- dounts and juice
Lunch- Veggie soup and sandwiches
Dinner- Stuffed pork chops and rosemary roasted potatoes and apples

The Babies are here!

They arrived on this morning at the local post office where we had to pick them up. There were 26 of them… unfortunately one did not make the trip. The other 25 are being watched and monitored. We ordered 25 Black Stars (aka black s ex-link) of which 23 are pullets (females – baby hens) and 2 are cockerels (males – baby roosters).

So the babies are in their new home in the coop and are settling in nicely in the brooder box hubby built for them drinking (or in some cases, sitting in the waterer like a wading pool) and munching down on their food.

Dh built the brooder box from this design/idea from the McMurray Hatchery Blog.

This is the second time we’ve started off fresh with baby chicks. The last of our remaining hens were killed by a wild predator sometime last summer or last fall. I have been missing my chickens and fresh eggs since. So hopefully these little babies will grow, start laying, and maybe even start hatching out some more babies in the future. At one time we had a flock of 40+ chickens. We had plenty of eggs then and even sold some of the extras. I’m looking forward to the fresh eggs again.

I hope to get a few things inside tackled today too.
  • make mint jelly
  • make granola
  • can the chicken broth up
  • finish my ironing
