Wags

There has been a slight change in the WAGS coupon policy (go to walgreens.com for complete policy):

It now states: "When purchasing multiple items, Walgreens accepts multiple identical coupons for multiple qualifying items as long as there is sufficient stock to satisfy other customers, unless a limit is specified. Management reserves the right to limit the quantity of items purchased. Customer and employee purchases of excessive quantities of advertised items is not permitted. An excessive quantity is any quantity above and beyond normal household usage."

Now how they are going to determine what is considered "excessive" or how they are going to police this remains to be seen. I see trouble on the horizon with them trying to enforce this policy. JMO.

Thanks for the HU, Jona.

Thanks for the heads up Jona!!!

Thank you!

Thank you Jona. It should be fun times ahead - probably not!

This policy could be interpreted fifty different ways.

I understand their reasoning, but I am not sure it will help prevent shelf clearing. "Normal household usage" for the Duggars would be a lot more than for a single person. How would they know how big my household is? Maybe I need a lot more than the shopper behind me. I would much rather they specify a limit like 4 or 6 or 10. This policy is too subjective.

I completely agree. A household of 3 would need a lot less than a household of 10 (or even more for the Duggars lol). Also, what about those of us (and I know a lot of us do) that shop for more than one household. I do a lot of coupon shopping for my parents and my husband's grandmother.

I would also like just a specific limit, rather than an interpretive one.

Thanks for the HU, Jona!

Maybe it would be more helpful for them to specify a "like" coupon limit per day. In that case we'd know what to look forward to. I foresee all stores eventually adopting such policy. Target and Dollar Tree have a four like coupon limit per household per day. I know I will be disagreed with, but with a four like coupon limit, I can plan my trips accordingly and not be limited arbitrarily by a cashier or manager. Besides, many coupons already specify 4 like coupons per transaction or household already. Save for J&J and Unilever, this seems like it's becoming an industry standard.

As far as an item limit, I agree that the passage Jona quoted is entirely subjective. Some cashiers and managers will be cavalier and others will be stringent about limits according to their own views on the matter. I wish companies would stop leaving important parts of their coupon policies open for interpretation. I understand they want to offer store managers the authority to run their store as they see fit, but it does not allow the customer's expectations to be met on a consistent basis. Unlike McDonalds where a hamburger is to taste the same at every location, a retail experience is not a standardized product. Walmart intended at the beginning to be such, but I'm not sure they are still on that track. Ergo, I tend to shop at stores where I know the management and their coupon policies. I'm definitely store loyal.

QUOTE] beyond normal household usage[/QUOTE]

What if I am OCD and all I do is clean all day. That is normal for me!

I didn't believe it until my good manager said something but he said there's a new policy on the limit of coupons, and no more ordering, he said it has to do with manufacturerers not paying them back... Has anyone else heard this?

There is a thread on q change at wags. But I didn't read that in there.

He told me just at this third store it changed yesterday and it will update online within the week.. I can't tell because I'm on my cell if its changed, but what a crappy time to change a policy, midweek?

I'm sorry.

the 'revision' is now incorporated in their online coupon policy;

Coupon Policy Help | Walgreens

under Multiple coupons, they added this;
Multiple Coupons

  • When purchasing a single item, Walgreens accepts one manufacturer coupon and applicable Walgreens coupon(s) for the purchase of a single item, unless prohibited by either coupon offer.
  • The coupon amount must be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied. (For example, a $5.00 coupon for a $4.99 item will result in a $4.99 coupon value).
  • When purchasing multiple items, Walgreens accepts multiple identical coupons for multiple qualifying items as long as there is sufficient stock to satisfy other customers, unless a limit is specified. Management reserves the right to limit the quantity of items purchased. Customer and employee purchases of excessive quantities of advertised items is not permitted. An excessive quantity is any quantity above and beyond normal household usage.
  • xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxx

Excessive quantity will always be relative, so YMMV continues. For managers who want to hold on to their goods, they will gladly show this to customers they *think/feel* are buying more than regular HH use; but for those who want to make a sale, I won't be surprised if they continue to sell *more* to their favorite customers, albeit, discreetly.

It sounds like it's to give managers an in-print reason to stop shelf clearers. You can probably work something out where you'll only buy 1 or 2 of each deal during the week but anything left on Saturday is fair game.

It is interesting to note the policy made special mention of employee purchases. There are several spouses of WAG SMs that have been openly bragging online on how they get first dibs to items on sale and I guess LP now wants to put a stop to this practice. A few years ago, there was a famous WAG blogger who gave reliable info on future sales @ WAG and one day, he was sacked and couldn't do it anymore; he later revealed he was buying tons of sale items and corporate frowned on it. That must've been a common practice for corp to put it in writing now.

I think it is unfair advantage for spouses/families/SO of SMs/employees to get access to as many products as they want because of their affinity to the WAG employees, but looks like it'll be fair game now. BUT I am sure they will still find means n ways to go around rules

We were given warning today. It will of course Vary by store however, manufactures were starting to argue over the amount of coupons used per store.
Example someone in a store pre-orders and buys 30 chexmixs and uses 30 chexmix coupons. The manufactures are arguing that this is not the way the coupon is intended to be used and as such refusing to pay. Walgreens has been losing alot of money.
From what my district manager told me, SM's will be on the line for any "excessive" amounts of coupons used on the same item. My SM informed us there will be absolutely no more pre-ordering at our store. And I know that is going to piss off alot of ladies because he always orders for them.
As always this will vary per store but with the SM on the line for this, I am not sure how many stores will not be limiting

The cashier at my store told me it would be 5 like coupons here. She also said that it was going in effect in all stores even Walmart.

The store I was in yesterday said this is an effort to stop extreme couponers. Bummer!

the BA showed me a memo that came from higher ups with the subject as EXTREME COUPONERS. it was sent March 11,2013.

a paragraph I took note of said: IF A CUSTOMER WANTS TO GET 8 OR 10 OR 12 *PIECES (?) WITH COUPONS, THAT IS FINE. wHEN THEY WANT 36 OR 48 OR 100 PIECES (the extreme couponer), WE ARE NO LONGER DOING IT. If this is the case, I won't be affected since most number that I buy is 10 with or without coupons

I remember it mentioned the reason that vendors are not getting reimbursed for the coupons, and thus they're losing money. I disagree with this part of the memo, whoever wrote it is misinformed. Although vendors have the right to deny reimbursement of coupons, those are for IMPROPERLY redeemed coupons but to outright say they are losing money from massive coupon redemption is false and misleading. Vendors like P&G have the right to ask for proof of purchases for redemption of their MQs to make sure they are redeemed as stated in the MQs terms of use. Violation of their Terms of use is enough reason for them to deny payment to retailers. Check the P&G proper coupon redemption as of 1/2010 on pdf for details.

*this memo doesn't seem to be well written with use of inappropriate terms. I'm glad if this is official but it doesn't speak well of the company. JMO.

Merging this post with the one Jona started.

This could stop an inconsiderate individual from clearing the self BUT like others have mentioned, how would they know what is excessive for my household??

I was chastised last week for wanting to buy 6 Almay make-up removers. Was asked if I sell my stuff on Ebay. This is a totally reasonable amount for one person, in my opinion. I use these every day. And I don't even have daughters that use them. So this is going to be totally random on what is considered excessive for a household.

Totally agree. Only the shopper knows what's used on a daily basis in thir own household. If the sale that's going on that week is a great deal combined with a q, then IMHO, stock up. For example, I blow through coffee and creamer like crazy, what I purchase may be excessive for one household, even a cashier's household, but not mine. However, I'm sure there's going to be those cashier's/managers that will allow this to be a YMMV situation.

For instance with the "free poise" coupon that came out.... I know in my area, one lady was buying everything off the shelf with the coupons each time they stocked. I guess they figure a single woman doesn't need 50 Poise towelette packages when she hasn't hit change of life yet. LOL

Digging out of debt, 1 coupon at a time.....

And why shouldn't you be allowed to buy things when you can get them on sale? If you can buy these and use them for the next year, how is that an excessive purchase? Why should they be allowed to determine how you use your facial cleaners? If I wanted to use them to polish silver or wipe my toes, why should they have any say in how I use them and what makes my usage excessive? lol... I was so mad when I read your post about them doing this to you last week. It is really too arbitrary to decide if you are purchasing too many if you are buying 6 items. That doesn't seem like a lot to me and I still wouldn't be able to use that many within a year where as most of my friends could go through these in probably a month.

I have 10 Walgreen stores within a 6 mile radius of my house, and would you know I didn't get a single poise item? (I went to 7 of them). I can see why they would want to limit customers from "excessive" purchases, and this would be a good example of that. But I agree, having an arbitrary statement that is enforceable only by opinion isn't really fair. I like getting free stuff as much as the next person but am I going to take every sticky from any product I see and buy things I'd never use in a million years? Not likely. Who has that kind of space

My daughter works at a WAGs, so we do ALOT of shopping there to take advantage of sales, coupons and their employee discount. I think their new policy will likely change again because it is so open to interpretation. I don't go in and normally buy a ton of one item, but I do have 3 daughters in my house so we go through alot of feminine products and alot of facial wipes, make up remover, shampoo etc. So if those are on sale and there are good coupons I will try and stock up. I have never been told that I couldn't buy X number of one item because it was excessive. Until one Sunday I went in and bought 10 newspapers to get the coupon inserts. I do not normally buy them there, and just to be clear there is no employee discount given for newspapers. I paid full price for the ten, the cashier never said anything to me (she's a couponer too so didn't think it was odd). The manager told my daughter later in the day to be sure and tell me that I could not buy 10 newspapers again from their store, because sometimes they don't have enough papers for their regular customers. He said the store manager may put a limit on the number of newspapers. I haven't seen that happen, and several of the other managers thought it was quite rude of this particular manager to even say that. So I guess they can do what they want if they think it will affect other customers. Needless to say, I will not go back to her store to buy newspapers!

I will say though, that it is very annoying when they have a good sale and there isn't enough left on the shelf. I wanted the Dixie napkins one time when they had them buy one get one free, and there were $1 coupons off one. I only wanted to get two total, but every day that I went in to their store they never had two packages! That really bugs me!
