![]() Extreme or Illegal - You Decide There has been a stirring controversy around a specific couponer on TLC’s new show Extreme Couponing. J’aime Kirlew was featured on the premier of the new series of the new show. Many people have been alerting me to the fact that she posted videos about how to misuse coupons at Target on YouTube. I am very cautious when it comes to judging people. I, myself, was on the first show and understand the intense media and blog scrutiny that people endure when they are on the show. On my original show, I purchased A LOT of groceries, but I also posted a list of exactly what I purchased. I understand that not only are people curious but it’s hard to believe! Extreme Couponing or strategic couponing is an amazing way to provide for your family LEGALLY. There is absolutely no reason to misuse coupons. Misusing coupons hurts EVERYONE. This is one large reason moderators and admin here at WeUseCoupons don’t allow discussion of coupon coding. A big reason people discuss coding is to decode and thus misuse a coupon. To see what I mean, check out J'aime's list: ![]() So back to J’aime. I have had multiple emails this morning alerting me to the issue. So I started doing research. I started reading blogs, notably from Jill Cataldo. I have had the pleasure of emailing and speaking with Jill in the past and she is exceedingly kind. She and I were featured on the same show, Nightline in 2010. After reading this article , I was appalled. I couldn’t believe it was that easy. So I rewatched Extreme Couponing that was on my DVR. Here is what I noticed via a timeline: Minute 0.00 she says Bounty Basic paper towels are always free. Where I am, they are never free. I have stores that double, but the best coupons I see are $.25. There may have been a stackable coupon, who knows. Minute 0 on the Safeway screen I see Nature Valley, Quaker Life & Franks Wing Sauce. Minute 0 screen flashes to wheat thins, spicy mayo, Campbell's soup, and on the computer screen it says 28 of yellow rice. Minute 0 the screen flashes to Safeway’s register and it shows Yoplait and Breakstone sour cream and Kraft Deluxe American Slices. Minute 1 it shows her holding a $4 Fiber Choice coupons. (I think it’s fiber choice). I will caution, TLC will ask you to show coupon prep for B-roll, footage for voice over. I’m not sure she used these, it may have been to show coupon prep. Minute 2 – ‘Thou shall not pay retail’. It’s a nice commandment, just make sure not to break commandments 7 & 8 in the process. Minute 2 – paying retail ‘isn’t necessary with the use of coupons’. This I can agree with. There isn’t any reason to misuse them though. Minute 2 - There is a wealth of information on this screen. Reference picture. Here is what I see: $.50 off Yoplait coupon off any FOUR pack. Also a number on the coupon most likely indicating the number of coupons. I see a Safeway coupon that expires on 2/5/11 which means she filmed late January/early Feb. A scrubbing bubbles coupons and Go Lean coupons are visible. Minute 2 – Screen shows the $.75 Mayo Coupon. Minute 3 – You see a Ritz/Wheat Thins coupon. This coupon will be used later; you see it at the store. Minute 3 – You can see her list. The biggest problem I currently see is the Zone perfect bars. Those coupons clearly state one per transaction. $0.55/1 Zone Perfect Product 2/27/2011 SS Insert (exp 4/30/2011) ![]() ![]() Minute 3 – This screen is a picture of the coupons she is using AND their face value amounts. We know this because of the zone perfect coupons are $.55. See above. Minute 6 – The mustard. On it’s face saying things like ‘lets just clear the shelf" made me recoil when I watched it. Even if she pre-ordered, you don’t that. I made the mistake last time I filmed of allowing myself to be perceived that way. That won’t happen again. But her husband saying things like, 'I think we have enough' and she saying, ‘no let’s clear the shelf’ is just wrong in my humble opinion. THEN to find out that she may not be even using the right coupon. Here is what we mean. ![]() ![]() She purchased 60 something bottles. The problem is that it is unlikely that she was able to find $.50/1 off French's Classic anywhere, which is what she purchased. There just wasn't one that existed to my knowledge. I found in our coupon database: $0.30/1 French's Classic Mustard 1/23/2011 SS Insert (expired 3/31/2011) - it's pictured above. ![]() ![]() $1/1 French's Spicy Brown Mustard 11/7/2010 SS Insert (expired 2/28/2011) Both coupons are not CORRECT when used on the products as they were depicted on TV. Minute 6 - J'aime puts on makeup. If you want my opinion, this was probably a staged event. It's television and that's part of entertainment. Commercial. Minute 10 - Kraft singles coupon were pictured. I remember seeing the Kraft deluxe purchased on the register, and I haven't seen the singles, BUT that doesn't mean she didn't get them. Minute 11 - As depicted on the show, this appears to be a clear example of coupon misuse. The pictures are below, you decide. The packages of Buddig that are in the cart are 2oz packages. This is a picture of the coupons she presented to the cashier at the store. This is the Buddig coupon in detail. Here is the coupon that DOES apply to the items that appear to be depicted in this transaction on TLC Minute 11 - There are multiple products pictured in this segment. Too numerous to list. Other bloggers have noted the nivea she purchased. They made these comments. I don't know what exactly she purchased because we don't get a clear view of the entire order, but it doesn't appear to be good. Minute 12 - The manager said 'that's awesome'. Minute 12 - Some people have discussed why the cashier is overriding all these coupons. This cashier had to deal with 4 cart fulls of groceries and 2000 coupons (according to the show). Any human would assume naturally that with cameras no one would dare risk using the wrong coupon. Minute 13 - The screen flashes to store personal. They are most likely people from the corporate office. As many of you know, Safeway has been promoting the show. There is nothing wrong with this at all, and they probably aren't aware of the way coupons were depicted on the show. I think they would have NEVER knowingly allowed it. ![]() I am going to be on TLC's Extreme Couponing next week, and although I can not release my grocery list just yet, you better believe I have it ready to go. I will share every item I purchased, the quantities, and the type of coupons. It's aggravating that this is happening to me because I am associated with this show. I have been upset about this all day. I've emailed Jill from JillCataldo.com and Joanie from the KrazyCouponLady and had discussions with them and am now convinced that TLC needs to hire a coupon professional to review the episodes and do the due diligence to make sure that they are not promoting fraud. When I film on TLC or elsewhere, Kroger (the store I nearly always film with) has a list a week in advance, matched with coupons. I don't play around. I want to be ethical and honest. I use A LOT of coupons, I don't apologize for that, BUT I don't ever knowingly misuse coupons. There is a difference between an honest mistake like Joanie from the Krazy Coupon Lady discussed yesterday and and the outright intention to misuse. There is a difference and WeUseCoupons will continue to promote honest, ethical couponing. Thanks for your comments, we welcome more comments. Again I want to stress that we are a family friendly site. That means that we ask that you don't use harsh language in discussing this situation. It makes me so sad that this was shown. I just taught my first coupon class since getting into extreme couponing and have been telling my friends to watch the show. I don't want them to watch something that is illegal or not true.I want my friends to know that this can be done but if they know that lady misused coupons to get that much stuff free how am I going to get them to try couponing. They might not believe it can be done with out cheating. What is the fun in cheating anyway? It takes a lot of brains to figure couponing out and is so rewarding when you can. I would not be proud of my self every time I go shopping if I misused coupons. What is the fun in that? you didn't do anything special. Sad sad sad. I hope she gets in trouble and I hope she didn't ruin it for us that love to use coupons the right way.
