Chicago school bans homemade lunches, the latest in national food fight - Yahoo! News
Really? How can they decide what you can and cannot allow your child to eat? When you are not allowed to pack your child a lunch for school anymore, there is way too much power being given to the school if you ask me! As a side note, how healthy is the tray they featured? White bread, processed cheese and lunch meat, canned pears, tater tots, and strawberry milk? *Misty*

I read this article as well. My dd in kindergarten takes a lunch every day because the cafeteria food is yuck! I would never allow her to eat there but on the same token I have actually seen kids in her class bring a bag of jellybeans and canned soda for lunch and that was it! On another occasion a kid brought a package of poptarts and a bottled dr.pepper. So in some situations even the “yuck” food would be considered healthier.

That is just ridiculous. The things on that tray (and in most school lunches) are not things that I would want my kids to eat for lunch. Forcing kids to eat that crap they serve instead of letting parents pack a lunch they approve of.... geesh. Even if the parent packs a non-nutritional lunch, at least the parent is the one doing it. Those are the kids they are doing this for, but do you think this will suddenly change their diet at home to a healthier one? Doubt it.
Have you seen Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution? I think the 2nd season is starting tomorrow night. I love it and can't wait to watch it!! |

Your response made me chuckle a tad. I work in a school system and have literally worked at every level....elementary, middle, and high school. Students at EACH level still throw away 3/4 of the school lunch and barter away/throw away 3/4 of the "home" lunch. It is scary how much food is wasted. By the way.....the poptarts and bottled dr. pepper is bribery food for the teachers not lunch for the kids ![]() bank. I want it as FAT as can be. For once......FAT is IN!

Has anyone seen that show with Jamie Oliver when he "revolutionized" school lunches??? I do believe the name of the show was Food Revolution??? (someone please correct me if I am wrong)
Long series short....he re-vamps a school cafeteria in Virginia (W. Virginia?) He changed the way that a lot of students and staff ate and tried to encourage the changes at home too. Personally I thought it was a good program. It showed the great ideas that Jamie had and also the budget problems that stood in his way of the program being a sucess (along with trying to change how kids eat...most don't want to change!) If I remember correctly...it's actually coming back and soon I think. Would love it if someone had the details! UPDATE: just found the info....sorry don't know how to add a link but if you google, yahoo, bing....Jamie Oliver Food Revolution you will find it. The show premiers on TUE. April 12th on ABC at 8pm Eastern time. bank. I want it as FAT as can be. For once......FAT is IN!

My .02 is that if you are going to make the children eat school lunches than, the school should be liable to make all the lunches free.

That's crazy. Maybe if they remove all the dyes and allergens from the lunches too. Just.. no way. I'm so glad we don't have to deal with public school nonsense.
