Default Can you Scan Coupons into Database?

Hi,

I am new to couponing and I am trying to get organized. I have my binder set-up and I have seen the great spreadsheets that have been created by members. My question is...Is there a program out there that will allow me to enter or remove a coupon from my database (either Excel or Google docs.) by scanning the barcode on the coupon? I can scan from my android phone or I have bought a usb handheld scanner.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Julie

A scanner is an input device so depending on the database you use yes you can... I too am on the hunt for good program.

I'm actually writing a program that will do this. I'm an IT geek by trade, and my cousin is also an IT geek (wayyyy geekier than I though) - so while having lunch one day (we work together) I was complaining about the amount of time it takes me to do my match ups. At the same time we both went "hey we should write a program that will work with your smart phone". I'm thinking this may take another 3 or 4 weeks to get it completely written and the kinks worked out - but the basic idea is you scan your coupons into the coupon database, I will also have a database where I can input the weeks sales (too hard to scan these unless you want to get into OCR processing and that's out of my realm of programming capabilities right now), the 2 databases will do the match ups for you and in the case where there are multiple Q's for the same item (say you have a $1.00/1 and a BOGO for the Suave bodywash) it will ask you which you want to do. Then when you're shopping you will be able to scan the Q's you're going to use that day and remove them from the database so you always know what you have left. (for example - I buy 10 papers every Sunday - I may use 4 Q's at one store, and 2 at a different - I would want to know I had 4 of that particular Q left in my binders)

You can follow me (I think somehow you can do it here - although I'm pretty new to this site and haven't figured everything out yet - but FarmGirl should be able to answer that) or on my blog at www.stretchthatdollar.blogspot.com - and when we have it ready I'll let you all know!

There used to be a program floating around that you could use an old Cue Cat reader (man, am I dating myself here...) but I lost my CC a few years ago so I'm not sure if it's still out there. Way easier than a cell phone, IMHO.

Thanks for the link. I'll check it out right now! There are apps you can purchase which are also scanners for your DROID. And that's exactly what we plan to do (the netbook idea) so the downloading/scanning/etc. are easier and you can have it with you where ever you are. I'm thinking of adding a price book feature too - but we'll start with the basics and add as we go. Since I know nothing about how to "follow" anyone or send a "friend" or "acquaintance" request - whatever they're called here - if you want to send me one I'll add you and keep you updated as we move along and getting ready to get it out for beta testing!!

Thank you FarmGirl1971 and Stretchthatdollar. I am so excited to hear this. Stretch, it sounds like you are developing exactly what I was looking for. I would love to be a Beta tester also!!!

FarmGirl, I am going to check out cheaphomesteading and take my upc scanner out of the box.

I still have mine, never took it out of the box. I'm exploring whether or not I can use it with my CashIn program that I finally found! Yah!!! Just got done today inputting my coupons. I've expanded since I last used it. I now have databases for Internet, Insert and files for the individual store coupons.

I think it will work great!

Gee this sound like fun. Guess I will need to get me a smartphone. Once done, it sounds like it will be easy to organize.

I love coupons! My stores are Walmart, Kmart, Target, ShopNSave, Kroger, Giant Eagle, SavALot, CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid.

Just Google a tutorial on modifying it. It's super easy!
