When you know you aren't going to be able to pay a bill (like your rent) rather than be "late", avoid your landlord, etc - do just the opposite call him or her and explain your situation and then offer some solutions - such as cutting the yards on your landlords other properties (or personal home), cleaning the landlords other properties (or personal home), babysitting his/her children so that he/she can have a romantic night with spouse. People are more likely to help you, be nice to you, and give you extra time when you are: upfront and honest, and when you are thinking about their needs and are trying to find other ways to make their life better and easier until you pay what you rightfully owe them (since they are probably counting on your money to pay the mortgage which you late payments makes their payment late to their bank) - so use the old philosophy "you get home fly with honey than with vinegar).

You can also place service ads on craigslist for whatever skills you have - whether it is mowing yards, cleaning houses, reorganizing somebodies garage, painting or wallpapering somebodies house - so that you can make some quick money to pay your rent.

Also consider having a garage sale (or ebay) - that's instant cash. You can even use you coupons and sell lemonade or ice cold cold at your yard sale or homemade individually wrapped brownies or sweets.

Check with your County's resource office, local churches, food bank, Goodwill, Salvation Army. I have been there! Also ask your WIC office they have great info on anything that can help you!!! I will pray for you!! I dont know your religion but the LDS churches are great to help!!

We've been in a very simliar situation recently. My husband lost his job through no fault of his own, in mid-May. The unemployment office lost his unemployment claim and we had to re-file, after waiting and not hearing anything for 3 weeks. Here it is going into the second month and he still hasn't heard anything on his claim, though he files his weekly claims on time. Still no money.

We posted ads on craigslist, kijiji, local yahoo groups, etc. Sold one of our vehicles, the new plasma hdtv's, our dinette, a bunch of other stuff. That money paid our bills, bought groceries, and allows us to keep fuel in the remaining vehicle so he can continue to look for work, at least for the time being. I cancelled cable, our cell phones, and if we don't have to have it right then, it gets unplugged to save on energy/money. It was bittersweet to sell all of our stuff.....but it beats sitting in the dark, with growling stomachs.

I wish you the best of luck. There are a lot of people out here who are going through similar situations.

Since you live in Texas you can get free food from HEB with their "out of date guarentee". I've been getting it for a year and a half and I no longer buy food. The way it works is that when you find expired items in the store you get a free unexpired duplicate completely free!!!! - you don't even have to pay the tax. Since you have time and you can take your children with you to the store - why not - free food is good food.

Since you are a full-time student you could also contact your school to see about any resources. My husband is in college and his college they do have resources for situations like that. Doesn't hurt to try.

My husband & I were in a similiar situation last year. As everyone said start checking with your local resources including your college. Call the utilities and ask for a payment plan.

You need to sell anything you can to bring in some $$$. Your husband needs to go out and do anything he can to earn some cash to help your family. Mowing yards, help someone clean out their garage, whatever skills he has, etc. Tell everyone you know that you both are looking for ways to earn some quick cash to pay your basic bills.

Hang in there, many of us have been in your shoes.

And your husband needs to attend meetings at local Job Clubs. Many times they know of companies that are "hiring" that are not published on the internet or newspaper.
