LOL Miss foggy Im pulling ALL the ears of corn off whats left of my corn stalks !! I decided after three days of coming home from work and seeing stalks bent over and ears of corn half ate that TODAY I was gonna be the one to partake of my hardwork! Nefver blamed it on that raccoon(I only saw him down by the road in my trsashcan) Ive concluded one of two varmits: squirrels or the "I forgot about that" woodchuck having his den under my shed(how convenient for him only spitting distance to my corn patch !!) The squirrels were actually seen leaving the area in broad daylite. Today I did a quick check(early am) made note of what was standing,, tied the behemouth REALLLLLLLLLL close to said patch and went back inside,, 3 hrs later hes all tangled up around the post and I lost anotherrrrrr 5 to 6 ears!! LOL I got the rest of em tho !!! boiled 3 of em for lunch and patted myself on the back while I ate them,, if I were in the have to survive mode of living off my garden I would starve this coming winter !!

My garden has been abandoned. The drought is causing too much havoc. Maybe I'll try again next year. The corn from our area is not too good this year.

I went into the garden today and the peas and spinach, salad greens are starting to sprout.
My kale is being attacked by white flies or white aphids. I haven't figured out which yet. I have a bunch of really sad lettuce that I need to remove from the garden It should have been harvested while I was on crutches. Oh well next year will be better. The potato plants have been severely attacked by beetles. One container looked basically dead so I pulled the plants in it. I was quite surprised to get enough red potatoes for dinner tonight. Only one was full sized, 2 were rotten and I have a dozen or so between 1 and 2 inches in diameter. I was shocked they managed to produce any thing since the leaves were almost entirely gone. The attack started right around the time I wound up on crutches so I couldn't really do anything about it. I left the other planter of potatoes growing since is is in slightly better shape. Since I had grown them in trash bags with compost and straw I composted the straw and spread the compost which looked amazing in the garden beds around the broccoli, pea sprouts, green beans, carrots, spinach and salad green sprouts. I need to find my lime. I noticed two of the tomatoes in the containers have a blossom end rot. I gave them some Espoma garden tone last week when the heat broke. The plants look really good and I am hoping it was just the heat bothering them. The peppers, tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers, and nasturtiums are setting flowers again. Nothing like temperatures in the upper 90's. I just wish the patty pan squash would have male and female flowers at the same time. I got the first round of male flowers then the heat hit. They died off and then I had a couple of female flowers that died off and didn't get pollinated. I hope they start doing something soon. I just may not be able to grow squash. This is my 3rd year attempting it and have had a grand total of 3 zucchini, and 7 summer squash in 3 years. I can grow celery beautifully but I can't grow squash. This fall I need to prune the trees in the backyard. I need more sunlight. They are growing beautifully since I am gardening under them. They love the good soil and the regular watering. One of them is a flowering cherry. I think I may need to cut it down. It was planted next to the neighbors fence under a power line. This getting tall enough I worry about a storm taking it out. It in a really bad spot to try and dig it up since the root ball is under 2 fences. The big maple will just get pruned on the one side. It could use it any way. It is big enough to tap for maple syrup so we may try that next winter. |

Well, first off, we wouldn't have a garden if my DH hadn't been irrigating it from the pond. We've been picking and canning lots of squash and green beans. The tomatoes are finally starting to ripen and getting some nice ones after the blossom end rot does it's thing. We've been having lots of nice salads and sandwiches with the peppers, cukes and tomatoes. I've been making zucchini & corn toss which is so delicious and fresh. The corn will probably be ready by the end of the week. The kids and I will be picking the beans probably for the last time in the morning. Then, I should have enough to last til next year. I really hope the tomatoes start producing because I do alot with them. I make spaghetti and pizza sauce and can it. I also make salsa and can that. I also like to put up enough tomatoes to do our yearly stew and enough for soups, goulash, etc. Surprisingly, with the spring garden, we won't have to buy ANY vegetables for the stew

*IF* we'd have put in our garden, right now it would be burned to a crisp. So we're actually thankful we didn't invest time/money into it this year. Texas weather has been brutal
