I am sharing your pain. 19 surgeries on four different insurances in 5 years. Number 20 will take place the day before Thanksgiving. You have payments going in so many directions it is hard to get everything paid off and they each want a percentage of what you owe. Add to those two air transports at $25000 and $19000 and there are days I could wallow in self pity.

Contact the hospital and see if you qualify for free care or a discount based on your income. My mom used work in billing at a hospital and I believe she once said that hospitals are required to give so much in free care. Also try to negotiate a lower cost. If you are billed by a physician separately then call them and explain your situation. They may cut it down. Good luck!

Couponing isn't a hobby, it's an adventure!

I worked in medical collections for years. They CAN deny payment and turn over account to collections. It's best to contact the agency and make a written agreement with them. This way you are covered and they also know what they can expect every month. Lynne D.

I had major surgery two years ago and the hospital I had surgery with stated no matter the size of the bill they wanted it paid off in a year and if you did not pay it within the year they sent it to a collection agency. The larger hospital told me they would rather write off the bill the stretch it out past a year. The hospital I work for you also must have a payment agreement then they will send it to collection.

I have medical bills that I have been making payments on and they call every month and I let them know I am paying what I can. My uncle went through the same thing and his lawyer said if u can only afford $1.00 a month there's nothing they can do cause you are making an attempt

We had about $1000 in Medical Bills that we owed. I paid $100 a month and it was never sent to collections.

We are also drowning in medical bills. Call the hospital and see if they have any financial assistance you can apply for. Explain that you cannot pay and offer to make small monthly payments. The hospital does not have to accept payments and even if you make payments they can still turn it in to the credit bureau. It is NOT true in SC that if you make even a $1 payment per month that they won't turn it in to the credit bureau. In SC the hospital can put a lien (claim or whatever term they use) against your SC tax refund. If you have a refund coming, then the state sends it to the hospital toward your bill. The best advice I can give is to pay what you can. If one dr. / hospital won't accept payments, then send that amount to one that will accept payments. Once the bill is in collections then you will be in a better position to offer a small settlement that they will accept. Please know that you are not the only one dealing with medical bills!!
