Default Medical Bills

We have several medical bills starting to roll in from the birth of my son back in May, of course we can't afford to pay off these bills so we are going to make payments. Can medical bills be turned over to collections if you are paying on them or do you have to pay a certain percentage of the bill for them to keep it?

What I would do is call the hospital and ask to speak with the accounting department. Each hospital is different.

I would [I][U]Imagine [U][I] that if you are making paymetns, they will be happy becuase it shows tha tyou are trying. Maybe they can write off part of yoru expenses as a tax deduction?

You should be okay as long as you are making some kind of a payment. Even $1 is better than nothing on the really short money months. If they refuse a payment you might be able to consider the bill paid in full, but I would check with legal on that one.

Default Yes they can!!!

Each state differs slightly on if they have something to cover this, however i can tell you that in OHIO they can and will!!! My father had open heart surgery totally 750,000 in bills. Of course his insurance took the hit on most but the co-payments were still much higher than their fixed income. We didn't waste time, we called each of the individual billing agents for each dr. and so forth is a different account, no one bill though all the same hospital, and set up arrangements and kept them perfectly - GUESS WHAT.....turned over because payment plans even approved went over 6 months and anything after 6 months - payment arrangements made and kept didn't matter.....even called the attorney general!!!!

I agree, I believe the key to sending a minimum payment or less is that you maintain consistency with your payments. Consistantly send a monthly payment regardless of the amount you can afford and don't miss any and you should be ok.

as long as there is an active attempt on paying them even if it is a $1.00 a month your account can not be turned over to collections. If your account goes dormant and you don't pay then of course it will go to collections.

I work in the Patient Financial Services department of a hospital and I can tell you this: make a FORMAL payment arrangement with the hospital. You need to know what THEIR guidelines are. State laws differ, but even within a state each facility can set their own rules.
We are very very liberal and will not send any account to collections as long as there is a payment every 30 days regardless of the amount. BUT, I happen to know that we COULD set a minimum payment and if it wasn't met, we could send the account to collections. We just choose not to.
The hospital doesn't want to send you to collections, because even if the agency is able to collect, the hospital doesn't get all that money because they have to pay the agency, so they're generally willing to work with you.
Also, if you are low-income, ask about financial assistance. We have a great program and so does every other hospital around here.
Good Luck!

Ask for a small amount - say $20 a month and then send in $25 (or more if you can) to show good faith and like the pp said PAY EACH MONTH!!

Unfortunately, this is not true--at least not in my state. A minimum CAN be set and you CAN be sent to collections if you don't meet it.
