I am moving onto fort Lewis jan 23 I have never lived on base nor my hubby so I was wondering if anyone had any advice. Tacoma is not working out for us now that we have a family so we figured base was safer, that's the main reason we are moving on post. We tried finding something off post but the area around jblm has the highest crime (horrible horrible area). So any advice for base living would be great

No advice but I do have a friend from high school that lives at fort Lewis and also has small children. Maybe you'll meet her! Good luck!!

We only lived on base for 1 year out of the 7 we have been married. It really isn't all that different than a regular rental. You have to do basic maintenance, mow lawns, keep it clean, etc. I think the worst part for us was that we never left base. We knew it was a temporary move, new base/ looking to buy a house. But we still felt trapped there. Partly because we live in a place where it snows 6 months out of the year and driving to town was just yucky at times. On the other hand, after we bought our house and were in town, we realized we wasted a lot more money going out to dinner and fast food and all the things we didn't do on base, lol.

I didn't realize how close to me you were!! I am spanaway!! I would choose living on base here then off base as well. I grew up an air force brat it was so weird not to live in side a fence when i went to college. I had a friend who lived on north fort lewis and it was always quiet there. We had friends on main fort lewis it seemed the houses were closer together. good luck!
