Ok, many of us have pets that we may slip scraps to from time to time. We give our chickens fruit peelings and raw veggie scraps (except potato skins as that can kill them).

But we have food scraps that we don't give to the cat or the chickens most of the time.

So what to do with all of those?


You can take veggie scraps like celery leaves, onion skins, and green pepper pieces and put in a bag in the freezer to make stock with when you have meat bones later.



But how many of you garden?


Once of the best things you can do with kitchen scraps (veggie, egg shells, etc.) can be put into a pile in your back yard near your garden called a compost pile.

You can make walls around it with cinder blocks or old wood pallets. You could probably obtain some of those things free at job sites where they are building or tearing down something.


Just don't put meat scraps in your compost. You can if you want too but you take the risk of luring wild animals into your yard. We have coyotes, bobcats, and more around where we live so I'd prefer not to draw them in with a free meat meal that they keep coming and make it unsafe for my children to play outside.

Thanks for the tips! Yep, I like to use coffee grounds around my azaleas.

Like you posted, I save veggie scraps in a tupperware container in the freezer. When I am making soup, I put the veggies in there. Or, I grind the veggies up and add them to spaghetti sauce or other tomoto based sauces. My kiddos aren't big veggie eaters and this way I have "hidden" a few healthy things in their food.
