I would LOVE to have 500 a month left after bills. I have 5 children, 2 dogs, DH, and myself. After rent and bills we have about 250-300 left for groceries/household car repairs, clothing, entertainment etc. and we make it work. If I had 500 left each month, half of it would go into savings and I'd still feel like things were good.

Even if I take as a given that she is allergic to jeans that cost under $100 or whatever, I still don't see why she needs to be buying clothes on a monthly basis. I've owned the same four pairs of pants for three years now, and the same five skirts. Every once in a while I'll get a t-shirt, but only ever if it's under 5 bucks and only ever from thrift stores (which, by the way, have name brands, if one is so inclined). Even with the kids, even with her odd aversion, she shouldn't need new clothes that often. They're not paper towels.

Groceries I could see taking up a sizable chunk, but it can be done, and I would think she could thrive on $500, after bills, on one income.

I'm a Seattle girl who loves rain , coffee , her brilliant, hilarious husband , and generally being a nauseating optimist .

of course it can be done it may mean having her give some things up. in my family it is me, my dh, and my dd. when we first moved out on our own and had my dd, we made it on much less but things weren't quite as much then as they are now. but still today we are making it. we dont have name brand clothes not that we cant if we wanted to but i can not justify spending 100.00 on jeans and 80.00 for a t-shirt when i can get 4-5 new outfits for that price. just makes no sense to me. sounds like your friend needs to grow up a little and get her priatories straight. espcially if they want a baby soon
