It absolutely can be done. We are a one income household and when we first got together it was very very tight. We had one child and another on the way, so it was really hard, but we just made sure that we had as Dave Ramsey Said Four walls, food and transportation. For the rest we just made do.

I don't blame you for being frustrated with her. I wouldn't buy the thing's she does even if I had the money. She's the type that will never learn to save. Alway's complain and have nothing
but name brand clothes.

She's going to have to realize that she has to choose between $100 jeans and baby things. When you have kids, it's stops being all about you.

I can clothe both kids for spring/summer on the $100 she spends for 1 pair of jeans.

Kids are expensive, but I definitely think it can be done on less than $500 a month. I am an avid garage sale shopper. I did just go to a JBF sale in our area and bought some clothes for the kids, but even that is expensive in my book. I agree, I only buy name brands used, but when I have to buy new it comes usually comes from Wal-Mart. They have great kids clothes. I have 3 boys. I really keep my gas down as I stay home and only leave the house about 2 days a week. We live in the country and I use about 1/4 of a tank every time I go to town, so I don't go often and make it worthwhile.
It's all in your mindset. I have a good friend who sounds a lot like your friend. They make about 100K together (she and DH work) and they have one daughter who is 12. She recently had to buy a new car b/c she just couldn't trust her 5 year old car not to leave her on the side of the road. They live in a tiny 1000 sq/ft house and struggle to make the payments. On the other hand DH and I make about $35K/year (DH only technically works, but we are self employeed so I do a lot of things from home). We have 3 boys, and have a house and land. Our mortgage payment is more than twice what theirs in, and I won't say that it isn't a burden, but it is a priority for us. We don't eat out, and we don't buy new. Our newest vehicle is 9 years old, and that is a truck we bought for DH about 2 years ago. We still have a payment on it, but he did need it for his business and we couldn't find one older in decent condition that we could pay cash for (we looked long and hard). Our other vehicles are 12 and 13 years old. As long as we continue to take care of them we won't have trouble.
We are trying to pay off debt, but with the economy in the state it is in and being self employeed, we are just trying to make it right now. We have our first cred card almost paid off, and then only have one more left. I kinda went off on not answering your question, but yes it can be done. We do it. We don't eat out often, and if we absolutely have to, it is something cheap. I do have the benefit of being home so that I can do most of our cooking.

Of course it can be done. That's just silly. If after bills (you have to wonder if that includes groceries) I had an extra $150 per week, I'd be happy is a pig in poo. Now with that said, if groceries are NOT included in that figure, I could probably still do it, but it would be a stretch with me, my husband and four kids, diapers, cat food, tithe to church and a little bit of leasure money (McDonald's mind you, no elaborate dining here).

I can clothe and shoe ALL of my kids, for a year, for what a pair of jeans costs your friend, just by shopping at a consignment shop for clothing.

But let's face it, not ever one is like us!! We would fight to the DEATH over the last peelie!

It can be done but not if you're not willing to make it work. Like someone else said above.... it's all about choices and the choices you choose to make.

Zaycon foods sells boxes of chicken, fish, kielbasa, hot dogs, bacon, fruit and more (sales at certain time of year for your area. - Sign up is free to see when the sales are!). Signature and posts may contain affiliate links.

I hope I didnt offend anyone with the name brand clothes thing. Im not a name brand person by any means and dont look down on those that are except in her situation. She seems to refuse to make things work.

She is the one that told me the other day that getting a clothesline was stupid. I was living in the 50's, she would take her technology anyday.. Yeah well, I want to save money and not heat up my house..

I just dont understand why she cant see that things could be different. She jsut refuses to try saying she doesnt have time. She wont buy things on sale in quanity either. If she isnt going to use it she doesnt want it around till she needs it..

I guess I just needed to ask those of you with children since I dont have any. I thought maybe I was being judgmental.

Thank you

Wow $500 extra a month. If it was me I would not be complaining I would be dancing like this banana Especially right now we have NO income. Dh is looking for a job but out where I live if its a good job you dont leave it until you retire or die. It slim pickins. I dont buy much for myself...I had to fight w/ myself to use those $10/10 kohls or jc pennys coupons on myself rather then my kids. I am not materialistic though. If it fits I wear it. My kids get new stuff but not tons, the basics and a lot get passed down and my DH would rather thrift store shop for his stuff anyway. Diapers and baby stuff are expensive though so it could get tight if they dont coupon for food or personal goods but my family all knows that if its not on sale or I can work it into a deal we arent eating or using it.

How young is your friend? All my friends with kids are all early in their twentys(like me) and they really were not ready to have kids... hate to judge, but a lot of times when you are that young you're just not done being selfish...

DBF and I love to have extra money to take last minute vacations (etc), but we can afford it because we are DINKS.... when you have kids, you stop coming first...

It would be nice to teach your friend your couponing ways, but it doesn't always work out that way... I tried over easter to teach my future MIL and SIL some of my tricks, they begged and begged me but when it came time to make time, they just wouldn't...

Stinks, but what can you do?
