I decided to try shoppingfever's suggestion about letting Dawn sit on it for 2 days. I took one of my tshirts I really could part with ( in case it killed the shirt or something ) and tried it. I put a lot of Dawn on the stain and put the tshirt down for 2 days. Didn't touch it. Came back to it last night, rinsed out the excess Dawn so it didn't overwhelm my washing machine, and laundered as usual.

IT WORKED.

No more oily stain - I am SO impressed! I now have 4 other shirts undergoing Dawn treatment and should be ready to launder on Saturday.

Dawn is THE greatest stuff to keep in the laundry room.

If I hadn't seen what it did a couple weeks ago I wouldn't have believed it.

I had a new Merona Hobo bag from Target. It's one of my "shopping" bags, and I keep writing utensils, notepad etc in it to make shopping more organized. I had a black marker in there and somehow the cap came off. The tip was against the cloth and ALL the marker ink wicked out and made the most horrible big black stain on the bag.

OH NO!!

It was a few days before I found it (between weekly shopping trips), so by the time I found it, the ink was completely dry. I thought the bag was ruined, but I went ahead and filled the bathroom sink with hot water and plenty of Dawn. I put the bag in there and the water turned black!

After a few rinses and rewashings in the sink the stain was definitely lighter in color.

So then I threw the bag in the washing machine with more Dawn, and when I took it out, I couldn't believe my eyes... the stain was GONE!

If you hold it up to a strong light, you can see what almost looks like a faint shadow, but you don't see it unless you know it's there.

Dawn is amazing stuff!

Those sain sticks that look like glue stick work like that. It takes so little I had one last 1 year. you coat it on there and throw it on the pile and wash in a couple days. But of course Dawn is cheaper and Lord knows I still have 15 bottles left lol glad it worked!

This is great, hubby is a truck driver and delivers food, his hsirts always have these oily looking spots on them so I will have to try Dawn on them now.

Dawn has more than one surfactant in it that binds to the oil and is not impacted by the addition of water. It sets them apart from other cleaning agents. Its also why Dawn is what is used to clean the wildlife that is affected by the BP spill. The dish soap is gentle enough to not sting the eyes of the animals being cleaned and has been used since the '70s.

A quick science lesson:

The trick to removing oil is to force it to be suspended in water, so it can be rinsed away.

That's not an easy task, since oil and water are notoriously hard to mix, and in Dawn's case, it achieves this feat using a group of chemicals known as "surfactants," a term that's short for "surface active agent."

Surfactants reduce the surface tension of water and can weaken the barrier that automatically forms between oil and water, allowing them to unnaturally mix. Dawn specifically uses anionic surfactants -- such as alkyl dimethyl amine oxide, found in Dawn Power Dissolver -- which means the detergent's molecules don't convert to ions in water.

Combined with other ingredients like viscosity adjusters, buffering agents and processing aids, this allows the soap to wash away oil without leaving behind a residue.
