Like I'm sure many more of you are also experiencing, it's snowing!!! Well I don't have any sidewalk salt or the money to go buy some, that's when I remembered that when we would run out as a kid we would use kitty litter to give traction. I then came to the conclusion that if I mixed a bag of the cheap tidy cats litter .77 (with coupon) with some table salt (cheap with coupons)it would melt and give traction. It has so far worked great today.

That reminds me, I should probably find something as well. No kitty litter in my house (I have a dog), but I also remember growing up and driving a small car and we would be told to store kitty litter in the trunk to help weigh down the car. Anyone else do this? Or is it just me?

I was always told to keep kitty litter in the car in the winter incase the tires started spinning. You could put that around the tire on the ice and it would melt it/give just enough traction to get you going. |

I used to carry a bag of cat liter in my car when I worked. Just incase I ran off the road would have used it for traction. We used to put it just plain liter on the sidewalks where I worked. It's also good to use outside in ash trays for putting out cigs. We don't smoke in our home so I know this works great also

Great idea about keeping litter in the car - both to weigh it down to help with traction, but also to have in case you get stuck and need to spread it under your tires for traction. I wouldn't have thought of that!
Another advantage to using it instead of salt is that it's easier on cars, too. Salt does help melt slow, but it gets on cars and breaks down the metal. Litter won't do that. So if you can at least minimize some of the salt that gets on your car by using litter instead of salt at home, you might help your car look good a little longer! |
